Damn, App State has a great gameday experience.
Our fans have never been that engaged for an entire game, even for homecoming. The student section stood all four quarters, people were tailgating all over campus and they even had fireworks when the Mountaineers ran out the tunnel. And don't even get me started about the press box. They served us barbecue before the game and pizza during halftime. They had a couple of freezers in the media dining room stocked with Pepsi products all afternoon long. Basically every single thing about App State was first class all the way. They are definitely ready to make the jump to FBS.
Damn, our special teams suck.
The freshman placekicker shanked a PAT, the punter had one punt blocked and another one partially blocked and our return units couldn't get pass the first defender. Bad day for whoever is the special teams coach.
Damn, our secondary sucks too.
I went on record as saying our D-line was the worst in organized football. I was wrong. Those guys are undersized and lack depth but they all compete like true warriors. They did not get manhandled at the line of scrimmage and actually made App State adjust their gameplan some. On the other hand, our DBs couldn't stop anybody. I know Quick is a bigtime receiver but he treated out guys like junior high school players. Once people get film on us I expect this unit to only get more and more exposed as the season goes on. D'Vonte Graham really let everyone down with that offseason foolishness. Hopefully he will learn the concept of what it means to be a good teammate and a unselfish player. Those attributes transcend well beyond the football field.
Our offensive coaches had a bad day.
The initial gameplan was OK but Pizzo and Broadway got way too conservative when in scoring position. They should have never punted the ball on the App State 35 yard line, down 14-0 in the second quarter. They deserved to have the ensuing punt blocked as a result of that bad decision. When you are an underdog in a hostile environment you have got to play free and aggressive. Take advantage of the opportunities that present themselves. I also think we got way too cute with playing Ricky Lewis in the wildcat and not in the slot as a receiver. He was out best receiver in the VUL game and would have taken some pressure off Miles against App State. With no Torrian Warren there was nobody else for Kindle to throw to beside Miles when Lewis was on the sideline. Plus I don't ever want to see Kindle come out the game unless he is hurt. He is the franchise QB.
What the hell happened to Derek Gould?
I know I nicknamed him the Future but it seems like he does not even want be out there catching passes anymore. That route he ran on that Ricky Lewis pass was simply horrible. He could have had a easy touchdown if he just had kept running. This is now the second week in a row that he has blown a possible scoring opportunity. As a senior wide receiver, he needs to be giving us more production. His play this season has been frankly embarrassing. As one of his biggest supporters I personally believe that I deserve more from him.
... but at least our road jerseys were dope.
At first I didn't even recognize us during pregame. I honestly wondered to myself why App State was wearing white uniforms for their home game ... until I noticed the "Aggies" across the chest. I might need to slide T-bone about $30 and a expired coupon for a Churches chicken eight piece meal deal and see if he can let me have one of those joints. If you look closely at the sleeves I think there were tiny bulldogs in the design.
