There is less traffic in the union then there ever was/is in the cafe. You act like Sebastian is the ER... Put the entrance on the opposite end if were worried about traffic flow or confidentiality. It shouldn't be that complicated. I just know the kids have been hollering for a new union for years now. Even NCCU houses some of students affairs and other facets of campus life in their new Cafe. We need to start thinking up not out. Yeah. I was one of those kids hollerin'. And I think you may be right. Well if we ever get the YMCA building to be renovated one of the plans were to move a significant number of services over to that building allowing for space to be freed up in Webb, Murphy and the Union. So who knows but I think that Student Services offices should be in places where students actually go............ the only many people who go to Murphy or any type of dedicated student services building is when they are either in trouble, a leader or a minority.

Transforming the YMCA is probably on of the most under represented power moves A&T should make. The 2nd would be to buy Memorial Stadium.

I like this and I think it is needed but I also would like to see some effort to build a new band room. Are there plans somewhere to bring the band room back on campus in a permanate home?

Most definitely we need a new health center, student union, and music building.
I am really glad to hear it being mentioned about all three buildings but a new music building and health center has been loooooooong over due for over 20-30 years.
I ain't no big baller but I just sent a check to the school 2 weeks ago. Maybe we can find a way to get the funds to get it done.

From what I understand, the "Y" will eventually be torn down to make room for a new engineering building. The next acquisition by A&T will probably be the church at the corner of Benbow Rd and Market St. The church will more than likely be torn down also.

I was unaware of the band situation until reading your posts. Has any word come from the administration on this. We can talk about it all day, but we have to get at the sources of power. $90 million for a new student center...$10 million for a new health center...$100 million planned engineering school and no long term plan for housing the band I had an art class and a music class in the old building and that place was a dump back when I was in school. A replacement is long over due. It was my hope that a band room and facilities for music and art training would be a part of one of the new building going up "on campus". If the band went on strike or failed to show up for a home game I know a lot of people would start talking. Has anyone asked Martain about this ? Letter, email, in passing?

Has anybody been to the new band location. The size is huge. I know they just moved from the motor sports center a few years back and that place was cramped. I always thought the band should be on the yard. When they move the bookstore into the new union maybe the band can use Brown Hall.

I know former Chancellor Battle wanted to expand the Music Program at A&T but I am not sure if Chancellor Martin has kept up this initiative.

From what I have been hearing, Dr Ruff and others like the current location because of the size and the close proximity to the practice field and the stadium. Plus the current location has been renovated also. I know it is not located on campus but the current location is very practical for the band's use. I believe Fraizer Hall was renovated recently, but not big enough for the BGMM.

I went to the new band room for Homecoming and its the biggest facility theyve ever had. Maybe the band is saying they like the current spot just to appease A&T leadership. Or maybe alumni are just stating their feelings on matters and speaking on behalf of their former organizations which happens alot.

I don't know what Dr. Martin plans to do about a new band facility or if he even has it on his radar. And I'm not sure how Dr. Ruff (current Band Director) feels about the current band facility. But here are a few facts:
1. Over 5 years ago the band was "permanately" moved out of Fraizer Hall for a variety of safety and code reasons. 2. They were moved to a warehouse behind the stadium parking lot. 3. The warehouse was too small to accomodate the band, the accoustics was bad, the lighting was bad and the A/C wasn't adequate. (They used portable blowers to help cool the building) 4. The warehouse had no private practice rooms, no lockers and no place for the Golden Delight to practice. 5. The warehouse was "close" to campus but a long way to walk at night for the girls in the band. 6. Last year the owner of the warehouse announced he was selling the building and the band had to go. 7. This summer, the band moved accross the street to another larger warehouse. 8. Like the first warehouse, the accoustics are bad, the lighting is bad, it has no private practice rooms and it is even further from campus and the girls dorms. 9. The new warehouse is wedge behind a small factory, a gas station and Bojangles.
That's the facts and here's my opinions: It doesn't take a first-rate athletic facility to build a first-rate football team but it helps. There are certain things a football team and a band "must" have to give a top performance. A marching band needs a large enough facility for all its members to perform and practice. It's hard to sound good on the field at halftime when the room you practice in has bad accoustics. But the biggest problem with the current band room...where it's located. It is in a dark area off campus next to a fast food resturant. I worry for the safty of the band members coming and going to this site. They have to cross two public streets to get to the new warehouse. And the girls have to walk further in the dark to get back on campus. Folks, this is an accident or crime waiting to happen. How much bad press will the school get if one of these band students get hit by a car or raped coming from the warehouse.
I know A&T has some really important needs all across campus but if we are going to expect a dynamic marching band, A&T will have to find a way to improve the band facility. I'm not angry at anyone, I just want someone to study the facts and find a solution.

I was told that they did have private practice rooms for the drumline and for GD. They had pictures back during the summer of GD practicing in a room with mirrors and what looked liked hardwood floors. I have never been in the building so I don't know what it is like, but from some who have been in there I have heard that it was nice, considering the situation and where it is. They still need a new facility built on the "Yard".
