A&T to build bigger health center By Jonnelle Davis GREENSBORO — N.C. A&T is building a $9 million student health center that could quadruple its capacity to care for students. A&T’s student health center was built in 1953, when the university had about 2,500 students, said Linda Wilson, the center’s executive director. With more than 10,000 students now, the Sebastian Health Center has outgrown its space. “We’re running out of space for our staff and for treatment areas for students,” Wilson said. “We’ve been looking at trying to get a new facility for the last 10 years.” The new center would be built at Benbow and Bluford streets, Wilson said. It is unclear what the plans are for the current building on Nocho Street . A&T is in the planning stages but could break ground in the next six to nine months, Wilson said. The current health center is just 11,500 square feet with three exam rooms. The new center would have 28,000 square feet and up to 12 exam rooms, she said... I'm excited to see this building come up. In '07 the state didn't allow the increase of the Health Services fee to incorporate the preparations for building the new building. (Yes, we were actually trying to be good fiscal stewards.) However, the new facility is needed and with our students realizing that for many of them this may be the first time on private insurance and can utilize many free services, this is a way to improve our community health.
The question now is what are we going to do with the old facility and its small expansion for records?

They will most likely tear it down or convert it to another facility, possibly for the second Middle College will are getting.
For the records, they will be moved to the new joint.

That would be a waste of money (specifically student fees) to tear down Sebastian. Overall the building is in decent shape. I agree that they probably may move some other function into the facility. However, to tear it down would be counter productive.

SEBASTIAN WILL PROBABLY BE RENOVATED FOR SOME OTHER USE.
A&T NEEDS A "NEW" HEALTH FACILITY. SEBASTIAN IS TOO SMALL AND OUTDATED. THANK YOU.

Sebastian is newly renovated. They just added space in 2008. The middle college idea sounds like something that would work. Also remember we have the offices off Wendover and Summit which if moved on campus would save us tons...
I think we needed a new Health Center, but we need a new Union more urgently. Why wouldn't the powers that be just couple the new center with the plans for a New Union?

There is less traffic in the union then there ever was/is in the cafe. You act like Sebastian is the ER... Put the entrance on the opposite end if were worried about traffic flow or confidentiality. It shouldn't be that complicated. I just know the kids have been hollering for a new union for years now. Even NCCU houses some of students affairs and other facets of campus life in their new Cafe. We need to start thinking up not out.
