McKinney Will Not Return as Clemson Women's Basketball Coach Led Clemson Program for Last Five Years Share DeliciousDiggFacebookGoogleMySpaceTwitterYahoo
March 10, 2010
CLEMSON, SC - Cristy McKinney has resigned as Clemson Women's Basketball Head Coach. Athletic Director Terry Don Phillips made the announcement on Wednesday.
McKinney served the Clemson program for each of the last five years, including this past year when the team had a 13-18 record against the nation's 15th most difficult schedule, Clemson faced four top 10 teams, and nine top 25 teams, the most in 10 years.
"I would like to thank Clemson University for the opportunity to coach at such a fine institution in such a great athletic department," said McKinney. "I'd also like to thank all of the people who supported me during my time at Clemson.
"At this time, I believe a change is needed for me and Clemson University. I'd like to wish Clemson University and Lady Tiger Basketball all the best going forward."

Yeah that's the part that kind of has me thinking that there might be some truth to it. I mean it makes sense.

This could follow in the same vein as Vivian Springer leaving Cheyney and making Rutgers into a national powerhouse!
I hope it is not true but how could you resist such a jump?

I'm not being critical in any way, but do you all really believe this? Per my sources, Otoro Coleman from Penn State is an absolute lock for the Clemson job. Please note people.....Vivian Stringer took an HBCU to the final four!!!!!! For all the Bibbs lovers/supporters, there is no reason to be worried.

What good will juco's do? The problem isn't with the players. It's the system that's being taught. I don't know Decks, but knowing which thread you're responding to will do wonders. ;D

Someone on Onnidan started this rumor but I haven't seen anything that mentions Bibbs as a candidate. It is extremely rare for an HBCU coach to get hired by a major D-I program. The only time I can think of it happening was BCU's softball coach getting hired by Maryland. The next step for our coaches is usually another HBCU...lol.

With the class of recruits she has coming in, I don't see Bibbs leaving right now.
Money always talks, but it would be a tough move to go from being a HBCU icon to being a small fish in a big ACC pond.

This was the salary Clemson was paying 5 years ago: McKinney will take over for Jim Davis, who stepped down last month as Clemson's winningest coach to become an assistant athletic director at the school. She gets a five-year contract with a base salary of $150,000, as well as $80,000 in supplemental income for personal appearances and radio and television. The school also plans to negotiate an incentive package. sports.espn.go.com/ncw/news/story?id=2040172
