Sixties,
That is essentially what I've been saying for the last 2 years. In my opinion, one of the biggest problems with the basketball programs is that the fan base doesn't care enough. This is a football school. For the most part, the fan base is smarter about football than they are basketball. I mean, heck, this website is by in large a football site. Look at the depth of knowledge on the football board as opposed to this one.
Eaves has been here for 7-8 years and really hasn't been successful at anything other than not being Hunter and getting extensions. He's a master of duping a substandard administration with numbers (budgetary constraints etc.). I know that to be a fact. Yeah, his budget is low, but in this league, you can win with only 1 or 2 players and to not have done that at least 1 time in 8 years is simply pathetic. That's why people like Aggie9195 looks like a golfing buddy when he supports him. There should be NO support if you are serious about winning. Hunter had a 1-26 season and that is terrible but Hunt has had more top 3 finishes and tourney wins than Eaves. I haven't checked recently, but Hunt even had a better in-conference win pct. than Eaves as recently as 2007. Here's the thing. Most people would consider Hunt to be the worse basketball coach that we've ever had!!!!
Go figure.
But with that being said, watch him sign another extension. And therein lies the problem.

NC A&T Releases Curtis Hunter; Begins Search for Men's Basketball Coach March 18, 2003 GREENSBORO, NC - North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University has announced that it will immediately launch a national search for a new head men's basketball coach. The announcement was made by N.C. A&T Athletic Director Charles Davis. Head basketball coach Curtis Hunter was released from his position Monday morning according to Davis. "The A&T Athletics Department thanks Coach Hunter for the efforts he has put forth during the past four seasons," Davis said. "We thank him for the leadership and integrity he has displayed both on and off the court." "In making this change in our basketball program, we will vigorously pursue a change in direction, leadership, ideas and expectations, that we believe are necessary to bring to our alumni and supporters ... a team that will year-in and year-out be a contender for the MEAC crown and post-season play." A screening committee, led by Associate Athletic Director Wheeler Brown, has been appointed and hopes to fill the position soon. Basketball recruiting efforts during the interim period will be coordinated by Davis. WB was on the committee that hired Eaves that could be why he has been patience w Eaves about the Mens program

I think a 1 year deal is appropriate. Also I think the heat turns up even more on mens basketball next year; we will at the very least have a winning record in football next year some where between 7 - 9 wins and will probabaly have oppotunities to be on the high side of 9. That being said football is on solid ground today we will be in the hunt for the meac champ. this year. Its taken Lee less than two years to be in a position to challenge.
Usually it takes longer to build a football program because you have 22 positions plus special teams.
I think the opposite will happen. With football in position to challenge the fans are going to demand a mens team that's in the title hunt.
We are all frustated with the season but its not over with. There is not a team in the conference aside from Morgan that we cant beat home or away. Dont be shocked if we finish second or go to meac champ game and that alone will call the dogs off.

No matter his record, Eaves is here to stay. Period!! Get use to it.
He should win far more games in the MEAC because all of the teams are pretty much the same (bad). Folks talk about the how great the Coppin win was (I was happy for the team) even though they were on the bottom in league play. W-S beat them, so does that mean they will beat A&T again? After seven years, there should be major improvement in A&T's performance. Folks talk about the superior budgets of other schools, but there isn't any major difference between all of the teams. On any given night of the week, they will beat up on each other. Only one showing some superiorty, and that's Morgan, who appears to be capable of losing to a MEAC sister team on any given night..

OH, and we really don't have the funds to hire a new coach or improve the basketball program or any other program for that matter, except for football. Until we can improve our finances, we will be stuck in reverse for awhile.

Ok; if Eaves stays be prepared for the following: 1. Never an MEAC Championship 2. Never in the top three of the MEAC 3. Players getting no development at there postion. The last one is what hurts the most; the kids deserve someone that can teach them. I have disconnected and do not intend to complain about Eaves and Wheeler Browns program. Maybe next time I write I will be saying I was wrong and we won the MEAC tournament.

On the players' development, I feel you can blame two entities:
1) the players themselves, you get what you put into it and some of these guys have had plenty of time to get their game in order; 2) and Coach Eaves for keeping some of these players around when it is clear they are not cutting it because they are not putting in the hard work.
You don't want players to be paranoid about losing their scholarships but you want them to have a healthy understanding that if they goof off instead of lifting weights and they play video games all summer instead of working hard on their game then they will soon find themselves not playing college basketball or playing somewhere other than A&T.

I will no longer watch the mens team. I'll just pay to watch the ladies and leave after their game is over.

It is time for Eaves to go; who ever said nope couldn't have been watching him over the past 7 years. I have; and his coaching philosophy does zero for aggie basketball. He insists on playing seniors who are not worthy, pulls people out when hot, team has never been aggresive (they are soft), consistently gets outcoached, will never get an MEAC title, just to name a few. He does recruit decent players; but his senioritis and coaching efforts outweighs this. If he stays don't expect anything different. NO WAY!! contract EXTENSION is FOLLY;EAVES has coached/developed a MEDIOCRE program, in a WEAK conference. His recruiting is pitiful, development of POST players is pitiful, realization of VALUE of COMPETENT asst. coaches is pitiful, but ability to to a GREAT POSITIVE "spinn" on anything is GREAT !!
