I have been under the weather the last few days with a bad viral respiratory problem and have looked at this coaching thing from the every angle and every prejudice, both good and bad.
I haven't written a column in nearly two months because frankly I couldn't get a handle on what or where we want to go with the head football coaching situation from either our AD or the administration.
I've listened to the back and forth on who we want to be hired but not what we need as a hire.
I admit I have wavered between 2 or 3 guys I would love to see come here but but I also understand a financial statement when I see one and what we can afford. I believe in getting the best value for the dollars we have available and staying competitive.
I am a strong proponent of strong defense first because that will normally win you 2-3 more games a year than a good offense will.
I don't like recycling coaches as a rule but after watching the past three seasons and where we are versus where our MEAC opposition is, we are seriously lacking consistent line play, steady QB play, and aggressiveness.
I can say in Small's tenure, our defense generally was pretty good in his three years but our offense sucked after year one. I cannot blame that on Lee.
I am now convinced we are in need someone who knows this conference, who has recruited the quad-state area (NC, DC, MD, VA) which is our base and will command respect from the players here and will challenge his guys face to face and inspire confidence.
So all things being considered, I will endorse Alonzo Lee and just hope Wheeler will pony up the money to find the best offensive coordinator we find and can afford.
I really do not see see us losing any ground in recruiting by hiring Lee since he knows this area well and with what he has done with Morgan in three years defensively is indeed impressive (tops in the nation in 1-AA), despite Don Ely-Hill's penchant for screwing up good offensive talent in big games.
He is about as close to a Bill Hayes resurrection move as we can make and frankly that is what we need at this point.
So cut the suspense, hire Lee and let's get on with keeping a superb red shirt class and getting 17-19 quality HS kids who we know in fact want to come here that we can recruit by making a firm commitment to a head coach for a five year deal and stick with him.
