As I understand it, Curtis Deloatch wasn’t even interested in playing football when he came to T. The defensive coordinator searched him out on campus and asked him to come out. I commented a couple wasted pages ago on how the requirement is bound to be relaxed in cases like that 😂
I’m pretty sure Miles was an engineering major and I’m thinking he was at T on an academic scholarship. If so, we can safely assume he was over 3.4.

I wonder did Curtis or Miles have a 3.4 GPA like the thread GPA and Brown Grass make 100 pages easy .. This is why I believe the 3.4 GPA requirement will not be good for the university; I seriously doubt Curtis or Miles had a 3.4 GPA. Two very talented players that would have been missed. Keep in mind the thing is we wouldn’t realize that we missed them. On another note looks like we won’t get Hicks; disappointing. Where is Hicks going? That would be a big loss for us!!!!

In this conversation no one is Right or Wrong but the few with inside access are afraid to ask Coach Brown the question why the need of such a high GPA requirement for potential walk on players !

NC A&T due to it's excellence in academics has set the admission requirements for all students high. The average admitted student GPA is 3.77 on a 4.0 scale. Coach Brown is a newly hired football coach and may not have enough influence over the Admission Office as our previous coach, Coach Washington, in getting Freshmen admitted to A&T whom GPA may not be high enough to be accepted on its own. This is pure speculation.
It is known that university coaches can get admission waivers for student-athletes from the Admission Office. In my opinion, due to his lesser influence, Coach Brown and/or Admission Office set the agreed "waiver GPA" to 3.4. This agreed waiver GPA is "typically not published" and is handled behind closed doors by the coaches because it sometimes gets player specific based on the student-athletes' talent, relationships (political, money, friends, family), etc.
Our past football coaches chose not to publish the agreed waiver GPA in their walk-on tryout ads. In my opinion, Coach Brown chose to publicize the 3.4 GPA as a detterent mechanism to discourage or reduce the number of students choosing to participate in the walk-on tryout. Why else publicize this requirement if A&T average admission GPA for incoming Freshmen students are higher and he could have easily address this GPA behind closed doors?
As several have stated, only Coach Brown and possibly a few others know his reason for the 3.4 GPA. This only effects ~10 possible walk-ons. Approximately 30 walk-ons should be returning next fall unless Coach Brown plans to cut a few of them, they choose not to rejoin the football team, or not academically eligible. We carry 63 scholarship players out of a total of ~100 football players each year.

So, they can be broken up into partial scholarships among multiple players. We don't have 37 walk-ons to consider.

For other D1 sports they can only issue full scholarships. My bad.

Hell I was an engineering major and a scholar athlete 4 times, had one of the highest GPAs on the team and I wouldn't of made it at 3.4. Julian Alford, an engineering major/WR had one of the high gpas on the team along with our full back trey and a few others. This a move to raise the teams GPA.. 3.4 IS HIGH !!!

Let's be real. You think that 3.4 would've been held strong if you you were walkin around on campus and the coaches saw you? Or would it have been more like "if you can give us a 1.7 and a 1.7, we good." For argument's sake, I'm 6'3" 330 lb dude who played both lines in high school and was all-conference or better, decided to let football go so I could concentrate on college, but got the desire back once I saw the call for walk-ons. But I got a 2.6. If I show up anyways is they really gonna look at my grades, look at my accomplishments, look at the needs of the team, look at me, and then be like "no son, you're not eligible." Man naw. If I wanna play bad enough and my tape and measurables are the bomb, tain't no way they won't relax that gpa requirement some.

Like I said, this is a detterent. Coaches usually don't publish GPA and address this after evaluating the walk-ons. After Bluehaze pointed out my error on number of walk-ons on the team due to partial scholarships, it is even less likely that this requirement is there to boost team overall GPA. 1 to 10 new walk-ons does essentially little to boost team's GPA when you carry 100 players.

FBS 85 full ships total but can offer 25 full ships per year . But can also pull ships from players and offer them to other Worthy athletes .

Let's call a spade a spade . This is just Coach Brown why of limiting the number of Walk on candidates period . Also if I was in Coach Brown's shoes and I offered you out of High School and you turned my scholarship offer down and then decided that you still had love for the game . You would have to come in on my terms and my terms are you need a 3.7gpa to Walk-on period , take it or leave it . That how business works . You got an offer turned it down but decided later you wanted that position, but the standards for that position have changed .

I heard Broadway say at one time that his formula was 40 full scholarships and the remaining 23 split in half for a total of 86 scholarships . One other fact. FBS is limited to 85 full scholarships with a max of 25 incoming scholarships per year while FCS is limited to 63 equivalent scholarships with a max of 30 incoming equivalent scholarships per year. I did not know about the incoming discrepancy. See below link. www.hachiesports.org/crunching-numbers#:~:text=Scholarship%20Count%3A%20FCS%20schools%20have,can%20be%20put%20on%20scholarship. Note: According to the article, the FCS can only have 85 total players on scholarships (full + partial) at one time. There is our answer. If the coach hits his 85 scholarships every year and he carries ~100 players a year, then there are ~15 walk-ons on the team at any time. Spread out over 4 years, the coach adds ~4 walk-ons per year. Out of ~100 players, you can't boost the team GPA up that much with 4 new walk-ons. Mathematics and the NCAA rules make it impractical or unlikely.

In house tutors that's what we called them at WT 😆 . And if they have some ability it's a + 😆. People really don't realize some of the not spoken things that go on in athletic programs 😆 . Every since the Minnesota scandal (some not all ) have found away to game the system. It's not cheating and perfectly legal because there gpa is not that much of a boost APR wise .But there ability to effectively tutor and monitor struggling players improve their academic GPA can boost the overall team's GPA and APR ranking and keep struggling players eligible . Don't get it twisted they still have to attend Learning Labs/ tutoring sessions but it's a lot easier on a players ego when you're tutor is one of your teammates. With that being said . That may not be what Coach Brown is doing (which I doubt he is) just a plug to let you know it's being done but not by all .

Well I am glad that we lowered the GPA requirement to 3.0 for the September walk-on tryout to generate more interest. I believe that is what I heard when Coach Brown was interviewed today.
