S.C. STATE FOOTBALL: In prep for N.C. A&T, Pough sees his Bulldogs as 'a pretty resilient bunch' CHRIS CLARK T&D Sports Editor South Carolina state linebacker Lane Jones (45) and defensive back Decobie Durant (14) combine on a tackle of Norfolk State wide receiver Isaiah Winstead (11) during Saturday's game on Willie E. Jeffries Field. NSU took a 17-7 win. DonnyKnightPhotography.smugmug.com
Perhaps less time to think about opening the season with three losses the better it will be for the South Carolina State football team. The Bulldogs, 0-3 after Saturday night's 17-7 home-opening loss to Norfolk State, have a quick turnaround this week. They play on Thursday night in Greensboro, N.C. against the North Carolina A&T Aggies, at 7:30 p.m. in front of a national television audience on ESPNU. "Thought we had a chance to win on Saturday, but we were driving the football and looking to tie it up, and then we fumble the ball inside the 5-yard line," S.C. State head football coach Buddy Pough said during his weekly press conference on Monday. "We had another opportunity before that, down in the red zone, where we threw a pick in the end zone. "We had our chances. But I was disappointed in our offense, even though they came back out in the second half and put something together and actually looked the part of an offense that we could depend on. But, we didn't get it done. And after the turnovers, our defense let us down some." A&T's Malik Johnson follows in footsteps of 'Big Four' By Jeff Mills jeff.mills@greensboro.com N.C. A&T offensive lineman Malik Johnson (62) has split time at center and guard this season.Courtesy of N.C. A&T Sports Information/Kevin L. DorseyGREENSBORO — Malik Johnson plays football for N.C. A&T. But it’s more than that. It runs deeper. Because Johnson, a versatile 6-foot-2, 307-pound senior offensive linemen, plays for the men around him. It’s something Johnson learned during three years as a valuable backup to an established offensive line. A&T graduated four of its five starting linemen after its storybook 12-0 season last year. “Playing behind Brandon Parker, Darriel Mack, Josh Mattocks and Daquan Blake, you get to see what it’s like to want to win as a group,” Johnson says. “Those four are people you couldn’t break apart. You could tell by their relationship how good they were. They put that on us, on guys like Marcus Pettiford, Micah Shaw, Macquel Hardy and me to continue the tradition. … They helped us understand the game was more than just a game. It’s a brotherhood. It’s the way that we live.” And now it’s their turn. Johnson started A&T’s first two games this season at center, then shifted to right guard after injuries sidelined starting guards Shaw and Hardy in the season’s third week. Johnson has also been a regular on A&T’s special teams since his freshman year. For Some NC A&T Athletes, Focusing On The Game Is A Hard Task After Hurricane Florence By Naomi Prioleau • Sep 23, 2018 N.C. A&T football player Dontae Keys (79) waited out Hurricane Florence with team mates at school as his hometown of Fayetteville sustained damaged in the hurricane's path. CREDIT LYNN HEY / FOR WUNCAfter a temporary hiatus due to Hurricane Florence, a number of college sports teams across the state are back in action. While some North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University student athletes had to stay in Greensboro during the storm and the immediate recovery, their minds were elsewhere. When you have problems at home like the storm, it really makes you want to go home and check on your family. -Dontae Keys Dontae Keys’ backyard in his Fayetteville home is flooded and some shingles are missing from its roof. However, he can’t think about it too much now that he’s at football practice preparing for an upcoming game. Fact is fact, but I believe he will snap out of it. He finds a way. He will do it. He's our guy! 43% YTD we would be 2 and 2 if he wasn’t pulled against ECU.

Weather forecast definitely is not looking good. I’m thinking the game gets played Friday with all of the T-Storms in the area.
