Which non-conference team we play in week 4 of the season isn't going to determine the success of our season or program. What will move us up the FCS ranks happens off the field. These are some core issues I think we must continue to address in order to take the next step up:
*Offering 63 scholarships - Right now we're allotting 51. In fact I don't think A&T has ever offered the max allowed. Next year Broadway says we'll offer the max.
*Recruiting - Expanding our recruiting pool and bringing in a few more transfers.
*Remaining apr compliant - Provide more academic support. We need to keep our kids in the program for all 4 years! Penalties and reputational damage sets the program back at least 3 years.
*Redshirting the majority of the freshman class on a consistent basis.
*Coaching staff - That means having a proven head coach and max allowed assistant coaches and support staff. A&T has 9 assistant coaches and only 1 support staff person. In contrast Coastal Carolina has 11 assistant coaches and a support staff of 4 people which includes a Director of Football Operations. Having to double and triple duties makes a difference. Our linebackers coach shouldn't also have to serve as travel coordinator.
Trust me, we are not going to get better simply by scheduling more fcs opponents such as Coastal, Charlotte , JMU, etc. If we want to get better then all we have to do is emulate what they are doing off the field. When we do that we'll be able to run through every MEAC team by 3 td's and compete with the top teams in fcs. Lastly Coach Broadway has won CIAA & SWAC Championships while routinely scheduling Cupcake U so I totally trust his experience and expertise.

I can see the argument either way, I really can but, I think for A&T this year, the challenge is moreso the coaching getting them to play to their potential every week. If the coaching staff can handle that feat then, it really won't matter whose on the schedule. I really believe that...if we can handle that much, the growth if the team will automatically come. I saw with my own eyes tremendous improvement from A&M to Elon with our secondary. So, I think we are fine.

man, i step away from my computer for a few days and i'm glad to see my peoples held down the fort! well, i missed everything! i didn't see jack! so ya'll have to be my eyes for me this week and tell a brutha what happened.
first thing i wanna know is how cartwright looked? i seen where he had a net of 87 yards for the game with a long of 34. 14 carries is exactly what cartwright needed. he should now feel a lot more comfortable if called upon in the howard game and that's what ya wanted for him to get out of the chowan game. 14 carries at game speed should've been enough to get him knocked around pretty good, he should now be ready to go against howard this week if called upon...

In fact I don't think A&T has ever offered the max allowed. Next year Broadway says we'll offer the max. i used to wonder why coach broadway had not used the entire full allotment of 63 scholarships this year, but then i thought about it for a while and realized its a pretty smart move. i'm thinking that if coach broadway were utilizing 63 scholarships this year, he would only have a very few schlolarships to offer next year's recruiting class because we only have a few seniors this year who are schlarship seniors (i'm thinking about 5 or less). otherwise, all other scholarship players will return next year, so the only scholarships he'd have to recruit with would be minimal. having 12 scholarships available this year plus the few senior scholarship players who graduate this season not returning will enable coach broadway to bring in a full sized recruiting class next year. as coach broadway previously stated, "we're one more recruiting class away from being dominant"...

Getting 13K fans out was real good. Yeah, the attendance was perhaps a bigger victory than beating Chowan.

Cartwright looked good. He still didn't get any opportunities with the first string offense, so the holes weren't there at first. He started to get a rhythm and ran very hard. He actually ran over a defender to finish a run and had to come out for a couple of plays because he was shook up. I think he will be a very good compliment to Cohen going forward.

Looking back, I think this game (Chowan) proved to be beneficial for improving Quick's confidence in himself and gaining the confidence of his teammates. Even many of us fans now feel he's the best guy to make this offense go.
It's unfortunate that as soon as he started becoming a better QB, he gets hurt. I think if Quick & Cohen are ready to play in the SC State game, we will not have a problem winning.
