North Carolina Central Expected To Play JMU In Football
By Mike Barber
HARRISONBURG — The identity of the mystery team is becoming clearer.
James Madison has an agreement in place to host North Carolina Central in football on Sept. 6 at Bridgeforth Stadium, a source with the Eagles said.
JMU had been scheduled to play two-time defending national champion Appalachian State that day, but the two schools agreed to slide the game back to Sept. 20 to allow Madison to fill out its slate with another Division I-AA team.
Central coach Mose Rison and JMU coach Mickey Matthews could not be reached for comment Monday.
North Carolina Central went 6-4 this year, its first in I-AA after competing in Division II. It averaged 17.6 points per game while giving up 19.5 per outing. Of its 19 touchdowns in 10 games, 14 were passing scores.
The Eagles went 2-3 against Division I opponents this season. They have applied to join the MEAC, and hope to play a MEAC schedule in 2008 while awaiting full membership, NCC sports information director Kyle Serba said Monday.
Although JMU has declined to identify its Sept. 6 opponent, athletic director Jeff Bourne said last week the Dukes have a single-game deal in place with a I-AA team in North Carolina for a game at Bridgeforth.
Central would give Madison six home contests in 2008.
Madison opens the 2008 season at Duke on Aug. 31. The Blue Devils fired coach Ted Roof after a 1-11 showing this year. Last year, JMU opened at North Carolina in the debut game for Butch Davis. Among the names being mentioned for the Duke opening is former Florida and current South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier.
After that, JMU will apparently play North Carolina A&T, then Massachusetts before hosting Appalachian State. Its schedule also includes conference games with Delaware and Richmond. The Minutemen, Hens and Spiders all were I-AA playoff teams in 2007.
