Walking in the Rain With the One I love

It’s the afternoon before homecoming and the chitterlings are boiling and the potato salad and greens are simmering just like they should on the eve of the World’s Greatest Homecoming. The weather isn’t the best this afternoon, raining hard and often, chilly, after 4 months of drought but my friends at WFMY-TV, Channel 2 tell me by game time it should be clearing, the sun coming out, light breezes, and a crisp 68 degrees which is perfect football weather.
We Aggies haven’t been able to taste the nectar of victory this year being oh so close in four of the seven games played thus far. Last week’s meltdown and blowing a 12 point lead against Howard on the road left an empty feeling in my stomach after the Aggies had dominated the Bison for 56 minutes in nearly every aspect of the game.
My wife will attest that I was not the most likeable guy in the world around the house this week. My staff at work have kept their distance as rightfully they should have. Even those pesky NCCU Eagles in my office have been real quiet this week because they know that something is up.
It’s homecoming at A&T and no matter what the record may be, good or bad, this is the week that all Aggies come together to fellowship with one another. We stop caring about Bison, Spartans, Rattlers, or any other vermin that we may have encountered or will meet in the coming weeks.
Our eyes are focused on more important things - on comrades, old friends, new ones, our off spring who will soon become future Aggies, and the moment itself.
For those of you that are in town back for the festivities, we welcome you. Those of you who cannot get back this year, we know your minds are with us. And for those like my mom who have gone on to their final reward, you stay in our hearts forever and will never be forgotten.
A&T is like no other university. It’s not about name recognition or the numbers of alumni floating around nor the big media names attached to the Blue and Gold.
I could type volumes of text books on the history of A&T, its beginnings, its growth, its successes, the building of young men and women, present and past that have shaped the world and made a difference wherever they may be. That would be a fitting tribute but it would be the easy route. Its best my thoughts be put into simple terms for all who read this can understand.
What A&T is about is the struggle – the civil rights movements of the 60’s and 70’s, rising from poverty, overcoming detractors and the odds, in the shaping of the minds and spirits of thousands of African-Americans who thrive and prosper despite the obstacles and pain placed before them in a society still not yet ready to fully acknowledge its history in its treatment of the black people.
We are family first, last and always.
We remember the past and we will deal with the present as we always have - head on but when you speak of A&T always, always remember these words.
Aggies don’t look back, We look ahead. That is our heritage. That is our birthright.
We are A&T.
