DAYTONA BEACH — Rod Broadway wasn't even around in 2010 to see North Carolina A&T get battered by Bethune-Cookman 67-17 in the blackout game at Municipal Stadium.
But Broadway credits that rout — which became famous for a power outage during the ESPNU broadcast — with allowing his team to upset the Wildcats last year, 22-3, spoiling their season.
“The thing that helped us probably more than anything last year was that Bethune-Cookman put up 67 on us the year before,'' said Broadway, who is now in his second season as the Aggies' head coach. “When you do that, I don't care how hard you try, it's hard to convince your football team that there's going to be a football game, and I think they came up here with that attitude last year.
“And I'm sure they're not going into the game with the same type attitude this year.''
You can almost surely count on that.
The loss last season in Greensboro, N.C., humbled the Wildcats, exposed some weaknesses and knocked them out of contention for the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference title.
This year, B-CU (3-2, 2-0) hosts N.C. A&T (2-2, 0-1) in its homecoming game at 4 p.m. Saturday, as the 'Cats will try to remain undefeated in the MEAC.
“The whole team has to turn it up,'' said B-CU sophomore safety Nick Addison, who is coming off his best game with two interceptions, one for a 90-yard touchdown return, in a 38-26 win at Hampton last week. “We've got to win the MEAC this year, because last year we let that go.
"We let that slip out of our hands. We've got to get some get-back on (the Aggies). I just know this year it's going to be much better...''
