Penn State will open preseason practice Thursday afternoon with questions about its depth at quarterback.
Junior Kevin Newsome is leaving the program and likely will seek a transfer, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and 247sports.com are reporting. A team spokesman could not confirm Newsome's departure when contacted by ESPN.com.
Only days ago, Penn State coach Joe Paterno said redshirt freshman quarterback Paul Jones was academically ineligible. Add Newsome's reported departure and Penn State would be left with only two quarterbacks -- sophomore Rob Bolden and junior Matt McGloin -- who have game experience.
Bolden, who sought his release from the team in January and was denied, said last month that he's committed to staying at Penn State.
