He's got a point. The impression I get is the guy from the N&R wouldn't mind writing stories if we gave him something to write. I mean, he fishes on this board for stories (albeit usually the negative ones).
I agree with Aggie08. If the SID is overworked he should get a couple of students to give him a hand. We have to use our resources and one of the main resources we have is students.

We had an assistant SID - Tyler Ball.
He was a good worker who had been in the office for several years. Not sure why he is no longer there.

Were we getting more stories in when Ball was there? I do remember that this time of the summer was historically slow for us in the N&R even back when I was in school.
Perhaps it's just ingrained in the athletic dept. that we have nothing to talk about during the summer. Maybe the school needs to do something to change the culture a little bit.

We were 0-11 last season and the worst team in the nation. If I was the News & Record I wouldn't be writing a bunch of offseason stories about us either. Who cares if the worst team in the nation got a couple of new coaches or made a change at the quarterback position - they are still the worst team in the nation.
If diehard fans want to find out what's going on with A&T football in the summer months they can just come to this site.

A good comparision would be to see how many stories the Raliegh News and Observer has about Duke's football program right now.

Thrilla, I work for the company that owns the New and Observer in Raleigh. The answer is ZERO! They have plenty on UNC and NC State though.
But switch that to Duke B-ball and you see plenty. There was an article lat week about the guy that backed up McRoberts. He hurt his ankle and will be out for a few weeks. He WONT miss any practice time at all. He just twisted his ankle. The Freakin BACKUP to McRoberts last season made news. He averaged about 4 points 3 rebs. That's what winning does for you.

When we were winning I didn't see much either. I used to methodically read the N&R sports section when I lived in GSO over the summer looking for anything about A&T football. There would be weeks between coverage. And that was coming off back to back 9-2 seasons. That's why I'm thinking it's ingrained in the athletic dept. I was in Orangeburg, SC a week ago and I scanned the paper. Several SC State articles. Granted ain't jack going on in the O and SC State is the only game in town. I was in Savannah a few days later and there wasn't jack about Savannah State in the paper. I guess the hard part is accepting that we are on the level of Savanna State. As for the Duke analogy, it's similar to wondering if there is any A&T pub in the Winston paper. Duke's in Durham. Does the Durham paper discuss Duke's football team is the question to ask. The answer: www.heraldsun.com/sports/Duke/A couple of articles about the upcoming ACC football season in relation to Duke were posted on the 22nd. Other articles on football and other sports were posted throughout the month. As Maxell stated earlier we have other sports besides football that are being denied coverage as well. I think it's not only about how bad we were. It's about how bad we want it. If we've resigned ourselves to inadequate coverage whether it's due to a poorly performing team, an overworked staff, lack of stories or whatever, that's what we'll get. If we expect and demand more we'll get more. There are programs that win or lose will get quality coverage with a positive spin. We seem to have accepted not being one of those programs and come up with reasons for it.

What do you suggest A&T can do to get more coverage?

And let me say this: the reason we started this site in 2004 was because there was a lack of media coverage on the A&T football program. Now that we have this site, I personally could care less how much time Rob Daniels spends on campus; because the BDF will get its informaton fix regardless.

Offhand I have no idea what can be done to get more coverage. I ain't in media. I don't know whether the other schools have better media relations or what but we need to find out and emulate what schools are doing to get coverage.
While this site gives us all that we need and then some (and I'm thankful for it!) there's still a lot more people out there that read the N&R than read BDV. I'd rather somebody had the option of skipping over an article about A&T in the sports section than not have one there at all. If we're going to take the attitude that we don't need the local paper then why have press conferences? We're masquerading as a d-I program, let's get some d-1 coverage!

Here's what A&T can try to do to get more media coverage: hire a bigger SID staff.
Since A&T won't do that, this debate is pointless.
I wouldn't ask our SID to do any more than he's already doing.

Most of the debates on this board are pointless, but what do you think about the suggestion to use students?
Does Kyle Serba have a staff of 20 people working for him or something? That cat is constantly putting out press releases whether anybody cares or not. I shouldn't even know Kyle Serba's name.
I'm sure our sports information department (person?) isn't much more overworked than any other hbcu's or smaller pwc's s.i.d. for that matter. I know the lack of coverage is probably attributable to a number of things but I have to wonder has anybody tried to rectify the situation other than saying "I don't have the staff"?

Even better, what we could and should do. Send a message to Chancellor Battle and his new special asst who Dee Todd has to report to now. Also, what would also make sense is to figure out within NCAA rules and state laws how to combine a position in University Relations and Athletics to work on PR/SID. We have to be creative...hell, and if this person can work on retentions. ha. (wishful thinking)

I usually get about two or three press releases a week from Holloway ... but of course that is because I am on the email list. Most of the stuff I just delete. The interesting stuff I post on this board. Hence, the recent volleyball and baseball threads over in the sports forum.
