N.C. Central replaces head football coach
N.C. Central announced on Monday that it has replaced Mose Rison as its head football coach with assistant head coach Darryl Bullock.
N.C. Central athletic director Dr. Ingrid Wicker-Mcree said in a statement that Rison, who has one year remaining on his contract, will be reassigned to another position in the athletics department.
He was six games into his fourth season, where the Eagles have a 2-4 overall record after a disappointing 20-17 loss to upstart Georgia State on Saturday.
“While we appreciate the passion and commitment that Coach Rison has shown, we feel at this time that a change in the leadership and command of our football program is needed,†Wicker-McCree said in the statement.
Entering this season, the Eagles had back-to-back 4-7 seasons, a tough reality for the school to swallow considering it had won the 2006 black national championship and finished the season undefeated as a NCAA Division II school.
But the transition to Division I proved much tougher. Rison faced high expectations to guide the program through the transition and produce wins.
N.C. Central left the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association in 2007 to begin playing as an independent in the NCAA's Football Championship Subdivision, formerly Division I-AA. The Eagles are a member of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference.
They become eligible next season to compete for both NCAA and MEAC championships.
“As we have moved through the Division I transition process, we have established high expectations for our football program to become one of the best in the MEAC,†Wicker-McCree said. “However, we must continue to improve in all aspects of the football program in order to reach those aspirations. We will begin the process to hire our next head football coach immediately, with a goal of having someone in place by the beginning of next year (January 2011).â€
Bullock, who will serve as interim head coach, has been an offensive line coach for four seasons.
