GREENSBORO, October 7, 2010 -- The North Carolina A&T softball team is coming off of a season in which it reached the MEAC Championship game for the second time in four years. But wins have not been the only focal point.
The Aggie softball players have also achieved in the classroom. Their efforts have earned them the honor of being one of the most successful softball teams in the nation, academically. Under the leadership of head coach Mamie Jones, the team earned the NCAA Recognition Award.
The honor is bestowed upon teams that have an NCAA Division I Academic Progress Rate in the top 10 percent of all squads in their respective sports, nationally.
"The academic success of your team demonstrates your commitment to student-athletes,'' said NCAA President James Isch in a letter to Jones. "Your team has demonstrated its commitment in the classroom and on the playing field, and they are setting a great example for all students."
Jones recently had a senior class of seven players that finished their careers with 111 wins. The numbers in the classroom were just as impressive. The average GPA for the graduating class was 2.96.
Each year, the Aggies have at least three players on the National Fast-Pitch Coaches Association All-Academic Team. Twelve out of the 20 players on the Aggies' squad list from last year, had grade point averages of 3.0 or higher.
"This is not only a great honor for our softball program, but it also puts a positive light on our athletics department,'' said Wheeler Brown, N.C. A&T's director of athletics. "I commend coach Jones on her willingness to stress great academics as well as great hitting and great pitching."
