No. 6 Page 21, No. 5 Dudley 12
Friday, October 29, 2010 (Updated Saturday, October 30 - 12:28 am) By Jason Wolf Staff Writer
GREENSBORO — Thuc Phan dove into the end zone, only to get up and see a yellow flag sitting on the field, 65 yards back.
Holding.
His long touchdown burst wiped off the board. But no matter. Page scored on the possession anyway.
The Pirates shredded Dudley for three touchdowns in the first quarter and overcame a truckload of mistakes to hang on for a 21-12 victory in Metro 4-A Conference action Friday night at Marion Kirby Stadium.
The victory clinches an automatic playoff berth for Page (8-2, 4-1), which will finish second in the conference.
“We have that kind of offense and the capability to do that every game,” Page coach Kevin Gillespie said.
Orlando Hatfield caught five passes for 180 yards and two touchdowns, all but 10 yards coming in the first quarter. The junior receiver had touchdown grabs of 55 and 73 yards, on both plays catching short passes over the middle and breaking numerous Dudley (7-3, 3-2) tackles on the way to the end zone.
“Just the missed tackles alone cost us so much,” Dudley coach Steven Davis said. “They hit us early and they hit us quick ... but just to miss tackles like that is very frustrating.”
Page quarterback James Summers churned out 300 yards of total offense. He rushed for 111 yards on 21 carries and completed 7 of 12 pass attempts for 189 yards and three scores.
Courtney Suggs nabbed a 5-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter to hand Page a 14-0 lead after Dudley fumbled on its first play from scrimmage.
Running back Mycah Gaylord led Dudley with 115 yards and two touchdowns on 25 carries but was the lone bright spot for the Panthers, who turned the ball over four times.
“This means a lot to me,” Hatfield said, mentioning that Dudley seemed to have Page’s number for the last several years. “I never thought that I would beat Dudley, so this is a big accomplishment.”
Page gave away three turnovers, all in the second half, and committed eight penalties for 50 yards, most of them costly.
