GREENSBORO, September 20, 2010 - North Carolina A&T head football coach Alonzo Lee calls it a play. So far this season, the Aggies kickoff return has worked as well as any other play in the playbook.
Junior Justin Ferrell (5-9, 185, Danville, Va.) has benefited. Ferrell's 85-yard kickoff return for a touchdown Saturday night against Hampton helped him earn MEAC Special Teams Player of the Week honors. In addition to being named MEAC Special Teams Player of the Week, Ferrell was also named Division I-FCS National Kickoff Returner of the Week by the College Football Performance Awards organization.
"Our kickoff team believes it's going to score every game,'' said Lee. "It's an offensive trap play. So like on offense, if everyone makes their blocks, we're going to get into the end zone. Justin is just making all the right cuts. The kickoff return is all about speed. You may get only one cut, and then the rest is all about speed."
It was Ferrell's second kick return for a touchdown this season, and the third for the team in as many games. Ferrell returned a kickoff for a touchdown 76 yards against Winston-Salem State on Sept. 4.
Ferrell, who also doubles as the Aggies starting strong safety, leads the conference in kickoff return yardage (308), and is second in the conference in average yards per return (44.0). The NCAA Division I-FCS record for kickoff returns in a season by a team is six set by Hampton.
The Aggies are back in action Saturday at 6 p.m., when they head to Durham to face arch-rival N.C. Central at O'Kelly-Riddick Stadium.
