Darrell Dickey, recently fired at North Texas after leading the Eagles to four straight bowl berths earlier is in his tenure, is among 18 candidates who have applied for the SFA head football coaching position, as of noon Friday.
Dickey was dismissed at North Texas after the Eagles went 3-9 this past season.
SFA is in search of a new coach after former coach Robert McFarland resigned Dec. 2 to take the offensive coordinator's job at Iowa State.
McFarland, 9-13 in two seasons at SFA, has joined Iowa State new head coach Gene Chizik in Ames, Iowa. Chizik, the Texas Longhorns' defensive coordinator the last two seasons, coached with McFarland when the two were assistant coaches at SFA in the 1990s.
There is a variety of coaches who have thrown their hat into the ring to be McFarland's successor.
J.C. Harper, the Lumberjacks' defensive coordinator for McFarland the last two seasons, has applied for the position.
Harper's name is hot on the rumor mill for a number of reasons.
After McFarland announced he was leaving, SFA players spoke of their hope that officials would promote an assistant coach to the position for the sake of continuity and stability for the program.
A former defensive coordinator at Western Michigan and Northwestern State of the Southland Conference, Harper said he is ready for the head coaching job.
"I am certain that I will be a great head football coach at Stephen F. Austin University," he said in his letter of application.
Harper also served on staffs at McNeese State of the SLC and Southwest Missouri State. He was a graduate assistant at Notre Dame.
The coach who Harper replaced — former SFA defensive coordinator Kim Dameron — is also interested in the position.
Dameron served on former head coach Mike Santiago's staff for four seasons, before Santiago was fired following the 2004 campaign.
Dameron is currently the defensive coordinator at Louisiana-Monroe in Monroe, La.
Gary DeLoach should ring a bell to SFA football followers.
A former SFA assistant under Jim Hess and Lynn Graves in the 1980s and 1990s, DeLoach is an assistant coach at UCLA.
Including Dickey, there are a number of head coaches applying for the job.
The list includes Henderson State coach Scott Maxfield, North Carolina Central coach Rod Broadway, North Carolina A&T coach George Small, Missouri State coach Randy Ball, West Texas A&M coach Don Carthel, Midwestern State coach Bill Maskill and Charleston Southern University head coach Jay Mills.
SFA officials typically select assistants on the move up, not head coaches.
The last four SFA head coaches — Graves, John Pearce, Santiago and McFarland — were named head coach after serving as assistant coaches.
The last Lumberjack coach who was a head coach prior to coming to Nacogdoches was Hess, who came to SFA after winning a national championship at Angelo State.
SFA athletics director Robert Hill said there is no timetable on hiring a new coach.
He said the school posted the job opening on Dec. 4, and it must be posted until Dec. 16.
He named assistant coach Arlington Nunn as interim coach Wednesday.
"We're pleased with the response that we've gotten," Hill said. "It's a desirable job, with the potential to win a national championship here."
