Central football coach Mose Rison thinks he's got a team that can be pretty good. "For the first time since I've been here we're not going to be outmanned at any position in any game," Rison said. "I expect us to turn it up and be ready to play. If we play good early, we have a chance to be ranked in the top-25."  Rison's confidence is boosted by a roster that returns 17 starters. The Eagles got off to a rough beginning a year ago, with six losses to start the season, but rallied to win four of their last five. And after what Rison called a tremendous off-season program, he thinks this squad is in the best shape they have been in since he arrived. The Eagles certainly appeared loose and confident Sunday during their annual media and photo day. NCCU opens its season on Sept. 2 at home against Johnson C. Smith, a former rival in the CIAA. Since leaving that conference, NCCU has been preparing for play in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. The Eagles have five games scheduled against MEAC opponents this season before playing a full slate next year. "It will definitely tell us where we are," Rison said of playing the MEAC teams this year. "We played other games that have been a barometer. We knew we had to grow up some and that's what we've done." The Eagles have a defense loaded with experienced and rugged players whom starting quarterback Michael Johnson said he sometimes has a tough time against. But because of that, Johnson said he should have an easier time against opposing defenses. "Our defensive line, they're monsters," Johnson said. "Our defense is going to prepare us for the tougher games we play this season." One of those players is defensive lineman Teryl White, who said he is looking forward to a big senior season that will have the Eagles playing seven times at home. "We've played a lot of away games the past couple of years. We've seen a lot of the country but it will be really special to be playing so many games at home," White said. "We're setting the bar high. We've gotten better each year." Rison said he is happy with the progress the Eagles have made as they've gone through the transition from Division II to Division I FCS. Camp this year for NCCU has about 100 players participating and Rison is nearing the maximum number of scholarships the Eagles can offer. Thanks to the additional players, Rison said he now can have practices that are more physical than in the past. Rison wants to avoid the late-game letdowns that led to losses early last season. "We still have to be careful but we've been very fortunate with injuries in practices before," Rison said. The Eagles got some bad news this week with the loss of sophomore wide receiver Andrew Johnson, who was expected to be a key contributor. He underwent knee surgery this week and will miss the season. "He played on it all summer and we thought it was OK," Rison said. Rison said Johnson hurt himself playing pick-up basketball last winter but he was able to go through spring football practice with almost no problems. But when Johnson was examined by team doctors at the start of camp this week, it was determined that his injury was more serious than previously thought. © heraldsun.net 2010 |

top 25? hail, he's got 2 d2 teams, 1 naia team (edward waters), and a struggling savannah state team on his schedule and he thinks he'll have a chance to be ranked in the top 25? yeah, right...

Man Please...he is saying that because the heat is on down in Durham. If he doesn't produce this year, this will be his last. That's his battle cry...until he meets some real teams. Then it'll change to something more like "We had a lot of injuries" or something like that.

I wouldn't sleep on them. It wasn't like we blew them out in Greensboro last year. In my humble opinion, there whole season evolves around beating us.

Gator, that's true...they have good talent. I think Rison's playbook is limited and Lee will expose that when we play. His favorite play is the wide receiver bubble screen pass...you shut that down then he's done. He's not a patient play caller. Now, Tyrelle White is a beast on the DL for them. We just have to get and stay healthy and not come out flat.

I wouldn't sleep on them. It wasn't like we blew them out in Greensboro last year. In my humble opinion, there whole season evolves around beating us. That's very true! If they only win one game by beating us, then in their minds, they've had a successful season. |

This year's meeting with NCCU will not be close like it was last year with the offense improving. Heck! It just might get ugly for the Eagles that day.

This year's meeting with NCCU will not be close like it was last year with the offense improving. Heck! It just might get ugly for the Eagles that day. They have a lot talent on Offense and we cannot sleep on them or anybody else on our schedule. i agree, krazykev. but truth be told, our game against them last year should have never gone to overtime. we had the momentum and were on the verge of blowing that game wide open before the refs screwed stuff up. remember, we were up on them 17-0 in the first half until a ref called a bogus roughing the punter penalty against us just before halftime. central had all but given up before that happened. but right after that penalty, central hit their wr (scott) for a long td off of one of those bubble screens which gave central all of the momentum and deflated our balloon. that shouldn't have been a close game, but i'll give central credit, they fought back to tie up the game. that one penalty call changed the entire complexion of the game... |

And also that missed fumble that Blue Death recovered and that FEMALE ref.....messed up the call......!!!! But still we can not over look them birds! |

No NCCU game is easy (regardless of talent and coaching). Emotions run too deep. |

That is right Maxwell, even when Central had not won a game in years pass....A&T still having problems beating them... This is a rivalry game and they are also playing at home...something that has not been done since 1992. You can never overlook your rival westcoastaggie and this is like their championship game |
