ASU riding Richardson into playoffs www.fayobserver.com/article?id=247916Winners of 18 straight against Division I-AA opponents, the Mountaineers need four more to claim the school’s second national title. They’ll be riding Richardson there. The junior has rushed for 1,065 and 19 touchdowns this year, one shy of the school’s single-season record, set by John Settle in 1986. Richardson already stands just four scores away from Settle’s career record of 43. With Richardson keying the offense and Jack Britt High School graduate Marques Murrell, a senior All-American linebacker, anchoring the defense, the Cape Fear region is well-represented on both sides of the ball for the defending champs.
“Everybody on the team works hard,” Richardson said. “But we work harder. We’re from the 910.”A 5-foot-9, 190-pound tailback, Richardson wasn’t recruited highly by any Division I teams coming out of East Bladen despite rushing for 2,225 yards and 36 touchdowns during his career there. He decided to walk on at Appalachian State anyway. And by the end of a true freshman season, he was clearly in the team’s future plans, earning a scholarship.

Let's be honest. How many yards would Richardson have on this edition of Aggie football?
We don't know if we recruited him or not (probably not) but there isn't a college open that can say they didn't miss out on somebody. How many schools looked at Deloatch or Hicks and said "we could use that kid"? Sometimes it's better to be lucky than good.
But yeah, we've gotta try to do a better job of recruiting in state. But you still have to play the hand you're dealt. Sometimes it comes down to just utilitzing your players in a way that maximizes their strengths and minimizes their weaknesses.
I hear Cox has some grades issues. Unless we're planning to shore up academics school-wide this honestly might not be the place for him. He's probably going to need some tutoring we may or may not have the ability to offer.

Plus he's bragging about the 910 (my old area code) and how that region is putting it down. Jack Britt Graduate is the leader on defense. These schools are right down the road. Also, did anybody notice Stoney Polite's son hitting 6 three pointers against us and playing for Mars Hill?? Is there a reason he's not an Aggie?

There is NO way that the coaches in ANY sport can catch every kid that goes to another school and excels. You also have to remember a couple of things. A&T may not be at the top or near the top of alot of kids lists so if a kid goes somewhere else does well it doesnt mean that A&T over looked them or that they werent recruited by T. Also goin to a program like APP allowed that kid to develop into a better football player. We dont have the things in place (agreeing with what Dooms said) to fully develp a kid on the field or off the field so even if that kid had come here whos to say that he would have been productive AT ALL....?? Recruiting is a crap shoot. and I think with the crap that our coaches have dealt with and are dealing with they are doing a good job with landing players in North Carolina..but trust and believe.... A&T aint too high on too many local kids "dream school" lists.... As for Stoney's kid.. there could be a bunch of reasons hes not an Aggie.. none of which really matter because we have Rush, Ewing, Booker, Nelson, Booth & Alston.. hmmm maybe we had enough guards... and from the looks of things the other night.. we didnt need him... plus being at a DII school might mean that he had some academic issues that wouldnt allow him into a DI program... who knows..

There is NO way that the coaches in ANY sport can catch every kid that goes to another school and excels. Not the intent of me posting this article. Of course I understand that you can't get every kid. I haven't seen a game breaker on the field since Jamal Jones left That's the problem. Why isn't it? It can't be the facilities. It can't be the atmosphere. It can't be a HISTORY of losing, because we won the MEAC in 2002 So why, if the coaching staffs are getting off their butts and RECRUITING these kids, won't they come? let's see what these kids can do. I'd wait until we got to .500 one year before I'd say we are set at any position. Again, I didn't bring those two names up to say that THOSE TWO should be Aggies. It's just examples of how there are Good players in the State that we aren't getting. If you are satisfied with the talent level on the field, then more power to you. But I don't see the Hicks and Basnights on the football field. Or the Phillip Allens and Joe Bunns on the basketball court

The problem is that HBCU's not just A&T are still seen by alot of players, parents and HS coaches as second rate institutions that are there if you cant get your kids or your players in school anywhere else. People might not like to hear that but its true. So look at this.. if you have APP State (national champs), Furman, Ga Southern, A&T and even Elon on the table.. i would be willing to bet that in four outta five recruiting households we would fall behind Elon.. and of course that would put us last. Its certainly not the facilities, or the atmosphere but perception can be a stronger determinant than either of those two factors for parents when making a decision about schools... (we won the MEAC in 2003)... as for basketball you havent seen talent on the floor the past four years because all weve had is WALKONS.. this was the WORST program in the country..Jerry inherited 9 walkons on a 13 man roster.. hes JUST now getting talent on the floor.. but i can assure you of this Sean Booker is as talented Joe Bunn( i think you meant Joe Binion) and as explosive of a player that you will see in the MEAC or any other conference. That is once hes eligible to play...

He might've meant Joe Bunn. That kid was a beast for the one year we had him.
What's unfortunate is now we're the worst football program in the nation only a few years after being the worst basketball program in the nation.
Is it me or was there one constant throughout all this stuff?
You know why that is.
It's because you don't see the Bill Hayes and the Don Corbetts on the sidelines.
There are always going to be good players we don't get. We did get an all-state kicker or something didn't we? Wait, he never played in a game. But we got Brenton Smith from Richmond County. He was a steal! ... What do you mean he's back in Richmond County?!? We got Quinton Corry from right out of Wake Forest's hands. .... He's off the team?
...uh... Quante Speight? ... Married?!?!? What's that got to do with playing football?!?
...uh... Shawn Moore? No? ...uh... Curtis Jackson? No?
ok ok, Drew Carter! ... Back in Ohio? Since when?!?
Dang, maybe we're getting our fair share but we ain't keeping them. Or pissing them off so bad they wouldn't send a package of dogisht to A&T.
The talent we actually have isn't producing. It isn't producing to the point we're salivating over the talent other teams have. I refuse to believe those kids are as bad as they've shown over the past few years. I do believe they're as bad as the support and coaching they've been given.
If we're going to do better recruiting in state we probably need to spend more than 15 grand on it. Even if the slashed men's tennis program does increase the budget for a year, that's only for a year. Then it's right back to square one (or square zero in our case). I guess it would also help if we'd hired somebody that had some recruiting inroads in-state. Stewart's good, but he ain't that good. The other two holdovers hadn't really been here long enough to have an impact on in-state recruiting.
Right now we're getting Central's leftovers. How sobering is that?
In defense of the current staff (probably the first and last time you'll see me type that sentence) they don't even have a year under their belt and they're still unsettled so we don't really know about their recruiting practices.
As for the previous staff, the missed out on a few running backs over the past few years, but wasn't that one of their recruits running behind a terrible line on SC State's defense? We were probably set at the position.

I was talking about Joe Bunn (the last post presence we had) and that was 10+ years ago. I'm also not knocking Eaves. He took over a terrible situation and has built it up. Still, we haven't even started conference play so let's see if this team can close out games this year.
Absolutely correct and I was not trying to throw them under the bus for the talent that is on the field right now.
That's the part I disagree with. There is a "wow" factor with athletes. Something that when they touch the ball, you KNOW they can play. I just haven't seen that. It's one thing when you are watching people play and you think "they are in the wrong position", "why aren't they throwing to him?", "he just needs to learn some fundamentals". I was in the stands for every game until Elon and I didn't think that once.
Maybe I'm just spoiled, because you are right. I was at A&T in the Corbett & Hayes era. I remember being in HighSchool and A&T having Syracuse on the ropes in the NCAA tournament, Corbett having the longest home winning streak in the nation, still having the record for most consecutive Conference Championships in Basketball. Hayes still has players in the NFL right now.
We can get back to that level and we shouldn't accept or expect anything less.

The other side of that coin is that our staffs have done a poor job in developing talent. Too many good players have left our program the same (and a few worst) than when they arrived. Whether a future Sunday player or not, an athlete wants to improve their performance. That seldom happens at A&T.
