Just got back to the house from the game and eating. ;D SC State had a nice crowd and as expected we were a little low on the attendance. It was a pretty large crowd outside the stadium tailgating and G.Garvin from TV1 was out there giving a cooking demonstration.
O yeah the game. I personally think that it was one of the better performances of the season. I've seen about every home game and today and noticed some improvement. There are still some glaring weaknesses(missed assignments and gen'l lack of football I.Q.). But the defense got stout for awhile and was making a game out of it. Then State went to some counters and the option and that sealed it. On the option than ran the same play to the same side in the same formation about 3 or 4 times in a row. Our defender played his assignment and ran past the quarterback and tackled the RB every single time. A little coaching will tell him to pop that QB one good time, really pop him and those pitches will become shorter and cause TO's.
The offense was great running the ball. They were mixing it up with the FB and RB and really were pushing State around with a couple of sustained drives. The passing come showed a lot of potential in the short to mid range levels. As far as trying for the deep ball, not yet.
I loved the play calling execpt for the beginning of the third quarter. After we stopped State and had some momentum, our first offensive play was a reverse, halfback pass. My problem with that was, we were pounding them with the run and the short-mid passes; The line isn't strong enough to keep defenders out of the backfield for that long; If that hb(i think) would've gotten that deep pass off w/out looking like a floating wounded duck I would've questioned why he was playing hb and not QB.
Wassup with our kicker? Missing XP's and he played for a multiple state championship program.
Sorry for the long post, but this is almost like therapy for the long season. Overall I'm really excited about what we have to build on and expect a few victiories next season.
(There was a little tussle on the field in the second half with ejections. Buddy Pough ran out on the field and pulled his player off by the facemask and was giving him a good cussing...funniest thing I've ever seen on a football field).
