Wynn helps the Aggies score 61 points
WASHINGTON, D.C., February 8, 2009 – Spurred on by its women’s 200-yard medley relay team, the North Carolina A&T swim team captured the HBCU Championship Saturday at Howard University.
The team of Vinetae Wynn, Donielle Campbell, Mill Wright and Karla Chapman won the event with a time of 2:00.97. Wynn swam the backstroke; Campbell took care of the butterfly; Chapman was the freestyle swimmer and Mill Wright handled the breaststroke.
“We did really well,’’ said N.C. A&T swim coach Shawn Hendrix. “It’s good that we are swimming this well heading into the conference championships.”
Individually, Wynn won the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:03.92. She finished a few seconds ahead of teammate Jasmine Gurley. Wynn also had a second place finish in the 50-yard freestyle. Wynn contributed to 61 points for the Aggies. The other two first-place finishers for the Aggies were Donielle Campbell and Mill Wright.
Campbell finished first in the 100-yard butterfly, while Mill Wright had a first-place finish in the 200-yard IM. Another big scorer for the Aggies was Aasiya Townsell. Townsell did win any individual races but she had a second-place finish in the 100-yard butterfly, a second-place finish in the 1,000-yard freestyle and a third-place finish in the 100-yard freestyle for a total of 38 points.
The Aggies swim team will be back in action Feb. 19-21 when they compete in the CCSA Championships in Athens, Ga.
