GREENSBORO, N.C. – Radford’s offense pounded out 13 hits and stole eight bases, and Josh Constable (Hagerstown, Md./Clear Spring) picked up his first career victory to extend the Highlanders’ streak to four with a 9-2 win over North Carolina A&T on Wednesday night.
Tyren Rivers (Suffolk, Va./Nansemond River) led Radford (7-7) with a 3-for-5 performance at the plate, Reggie Keen (Danville, Va./George Washington - Danville) went 2-for-4 and stole four bases, and Matt Mack (Davidsonville, Md./St. John's College H.S.) and Alex Guerra (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh) drove in two runs each for the Highlanders, who brought their record back to .500 for the season.
Constable made his first career start and went a scheduled four innings to earn his first victory (1-0). The righty staked the Highlanders to a lead, allowing two runs on six hits with a strikeout while inducing a pair of double plays.
Radford’s relief pitching held the Aggies (6-9) scoreless the rest of the way, highlighted by Brad Wimmer’s four innings. Wimmer set down 12 hitters in row from the fifth inning on, adding four strikeouts. Cassidy McDaniel (Warrenton, Va./Fauquier) worked a perfect ninth as the Highlanders finished off the final 15 North Carolina A&T hitters of the game.
“We needed a good start out of Josh Constable, and we got it,” head coach Joe Raccuia said. “We also needed to freshen up the bullpen for the weekend, and Constable, Brad Wimmer and Cassidy McDaniel did a great job.”
“Our staff was right at 100 pitches for the game. Plus, Wimmer was electric, and we played good defense again today.”
Xavier Macklin had the only multi-hit game for the Aggies, going 2-for-4.
Radford broke through in the fourth inning, using three doubles to grab a 3-0 lead. Mack followed Keen’s leadoff double with one of his own, a hit to left field that gave the Highlanders their first run of the day. Guerra and Carl Travers (Huntingtown, Md./Riverdale Baptist) added one-out RBI hits to extend Radford’s lead.
After Nick Rogers’ RBI single in the bottom of the fourth made it a 3-1 game for North Carolina A&T, the Highlanders pushed across two more in the fifth to make it 5-1 when the first four men reached to lead off the inning.
In the home half, the Aggies tried to answer by loading the bases with no one out, but Wimmer retired the next three batters to end the threat.
Radford pushed across four more in the final two innings, with Keen and Guerra’s RBI hits in the eighth extending Radford’s lead to 8-2.
The Highlanders open Big South conference play this weekend, hosting UNC Asheville in a three-game series beginning Friday at 3 p.m.
