Rams get a 'B' for play in scrimmage By John Dell
JOURNAL REPORTERThe best thing about playing a spring-football scrimmage for Coach Connell Maynor of Winston-Salem State is that he is guaranteed a victory. "We scored more than them," Maynor joked. The Rams, in front of about 300 people at Carver High School, put the finishing touches on spring practice with a controlled scrimmage that had a little bit of everything. The offense scored three touchdowns, all on short runs by running back Nic Cooper, and got a 35-yard field goal from Landon Thayer. Two of the touchdowns came after the offense started drives on the 20- and 10-yard lines and only had to go a short distance. But one drive, that went 80 yards, was directed by quarterback Cameron Smith, a redshirt freshman who is a transfer from Navy. Of the four quarterbacks who played, Smith and another redshirt freshman, Jordan Reid, looked the most comfortable in Maynor's new pro-style offense. The offense was helped by the bruising running of Cooper, who was academically ineligible last season but shook off the rust pretty well.
