Jan. 24, 2010
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Friends, food, fellowship and football. That is precisely what was on hand Sunday afternoon as the inaugural “Bite With Bill Booster Bash” drew over 100 supporters of WSSU Athletics to the WSSU Bowman Gray Fieldhouse to enjoy heavy hors d' odouvres and beverages and watch the NFL Playoffs with WSSU Director of Athletics, Bill Hayes.
Proud young alumni and historic figures in the athletic legacy of WSSU alike gathered at the Bowman Gray Fieldhouse to enjoy the National Football League conference championships on four big-screen monitors in an event filled with laughter, good food and great company.
“I am amazed at how well these young people are doing. These young men and young ladies look great. They are thriving and growing and moving forward, just like we had envisioned 30 years ago when I started here at Winston-Salem State” WSSU Director of Athletics, Bill Hayes said.
“It’s just a great thing, first of all, to see them and to see that they are doing well and we are so proud that their spirit is to help Winston-Salem State University be the best that it can be. We are so very fortunate to be able to welcome these young people back for an event like this” Hayes added.
The event, presented through the generous sponsorship of Time Warner Cable was a gathering of young alumni, WSSU Athletic Department administrators and coaches and several legendary figures in the history of Rams’ athletics.
Former WSSU football standout and current member of the Tennessee Titans, William Hayes was on hand to enjoy the festivities as the standout defensive end who started 12 games for the Titans this season, surrounded by friends and family, was on hand to support WSSU Athletics.
NFL alumni Richard Huntley, Yancey Thigpen and Tory Woodbury as well as Arena Football League alums Les Barley and Connell Maynor (also WSSU’s Head Football Coach) enjoyed a reunion with former teammates and friends in a celebration of WSSU Athletics.
“It’s a great opportunity, being invited back to WSSU to re-engage with the Athletic Department. Events like these help to strengthen the program and helps to insure the success of the young people that choose to follow the same path that I did as they choose to become Rams and Lady Rams” WSSU former quarterback and NFL alum, Tory Woodbury added.
“I am glad that we have a chance to give back to the school that gave so much to us. This is something that means a lot to me,” the former member of the New York Jets, Denver Broncos and Buffalo Bills added.
The event, the first of many “Booster Bashes” planned by the WSSU Department of Athletics, proved to be a smashing success as WSSU Director of Athletics, Bill Hayes continues to lay the foundation for the future successes of the WSSU Athletic program.
