SU picks NFL vet Mitchell By PERRYN KEYS Advocate sportswriter Published: Jan 1, 2010 - Page: 1AHours before he learned his fate with Southern University, Stump Mitchell said an offer to become its next football coach would be “a dream come true.” It’s not a dream anymore. Southern’s 24-day search for a new coach ended with its original lead candidate, Mitchell, a man who likely will arrive in Baton Rouge next week with a long history in the NFL, but only three years of experience as a college head coach. Mitchell, the Washington Redskins running backs coach and assistant head coach, has agreed in principle to take over at SU next season, Chancellor Kofi Lomotey said. “We’re very excited,” Lomotey said. “Stump will be a tremendous addition for us. I believe he’ll add a boost to our athletic department, and he’ll also bring some excitement back to (A.W.) Mumford Stadium.” For the rest of the story: www.2theadvocate.com/news/80456682.html

Southern is making huge mistake with their AD hiring his buddy versus a established coach or coordinator. I wouldn't be surprised if Fobbs didn't show up on his staff and I'm not joking.

www.2theadvocate.com/sports/southern/featured/85333532.html?showAll=yMitchell to get same salary as RichardsonNew Southern University football coach Stump Mitchell will be paid the same salary as his predecessor, Pete Richardson. Mitchel got a three-year contract at $200,000 per season with a fourth year as a mutual option, Southern Athletic Director Greg LaFleur said Wednesday. Richardson, who spent 17 years as Southern’s coach, was paid $200,000 for his final seasons. He retired after last season and was replaced by Mitchell, a former Washington Redskins assistant coach, in January. Mitchell will have $400,000 available to pay his assistant coaches, LaFleur said. Richardson had $335,000 to spread among six assistant coaches last season.

Based on experience and other credentials; Coach Fobbs was overpaid and Coach Mitchell is overpaid too, but apparently this is now the market price for head coaches at this level.

if i'm southern university, anyone who is hired as head football coach would get a short leash. they pay extremely well, they have a huge fan base, and they probably have the absolute best football facilities of any hbcu in the country. if you can't win at southern, you can't win at any hbcu...
