MEAC's leadership is clueless

A lot of readers are asking me why the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference is taking so long to announce a decision about Savannah State University's application for membership to the historically black conference.
Readers are asking me if I think the fact that SSU has an interim athletic director (Bart Bellairs recently resigned and accepted the A.D. job at Southeastern Louisiana) is holding up the process.
I'd be surprised if the MEAC's current leadership even knows that SSU has an interim A.D. right now. Seriously. The hold up likely is the MEAC itself.
MEAC Commissioner Dennis Thomas is thoroughly unimpressive. His standard answer to questions is "We'll talk in the future." He's been saying that to me since 2006. He's a dodger. Doesn't have time to be bothered. Doesn't have time to communicate his plan to media and fans of the MEAC.
Frankly, I do not think Thomas has a plan for conference growth. If he does, why does he hide behind a veil of secrecy?
The MEAC is perhaps the least-respected conference in the nation. I believe SSU can do better. Respect is not given. It must be earned. If the MEAC wants to be treated like a legitimate conference then it must conduct itself accordingly.
Posting a one-sentence statement on its Web site that read, "The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference wrapped up its two-day Mid-Winter Meetings in Virginia Beach, Va., on Dec. 8, 2009" is a slap in the face to everyone who takes the time to show interest in the MEAC. It's insulting to fans. It's insulting to media (the few that actually do bother to cover MEAC schools).
Full disclosure is a lost concept to the current "leadership" of the MEAC. The MEAC Director of Media Relations, Patricia Porter, said, "Normally, we don't put out any information regarding what was discussed within the meetings." Why? Conferences throughout the nation put out press releases every day that inform their followers of the goings-on and issues being discussed, debated and voted upon.
Thomas and his crew need to take a field trip to conferences like the SEC, ACC or even Southern Conference and learn how to communicate. People who still care about the MEAC are sick and tired of being kept in the dark.
