RAMS INK SIX DURING EARLY SIGNING PERIOD
RICHMOND, Va. – As the Virginia Commonwealth University women’s basketball team prepares for its season-opener against Virginia Tech on Monday, the Rams are also showing their preparation for the future. The program announced today the signing of six recruits during the early signing period.
Joining the Rams will be Andrea Barbour (Charlottesville, Va.), Jacqueline Brewer (Martinsburg, W.V.), Shekinah Henry (Vadalia, Ga.), Sonia Johnson (Newport News, Va.), Robyn Parks (Waldorf, Md.) and Zakia Williams (Columbus, Ga.).
“Our coaching staff is thrilled with the signing of these six new student-athletes to our VCU Women's Basketball program,” said Head Coach Beth Cunningham. “My assistant coaches did an outstanding job in identifying and signing a group of young ladies that will fill the needs of our basketball program.”
Barbour, a 5’10” shooting guard from Patrick Henry Community College, ranked third in JUCO and 18th nationally at her position last season. Recognized for her strength and athleticism, Barbour will be counted on to provide an offensive presence as she possesses a true scorer’s mentality. The Charlottesville, Va., native received Preseason Division II JUCO first team All-America honors and was an All-Atlantic Coast Conference Rookie selection following the 2007-08 season at Virginia Tech, where she averaged 15 points per game.
“Andrea is a proven scorer at the collegiate level,” said Cunningham. “Her ability to impact us on both ends of the floor is going to be critical, especially with the graduation of the guards we have in this senior class.”
Among the best long-range scorers in the 2010 class, the 5’10” Brewer will join Barbour to add a spark on offense. Her accuracy behind the arc is perhaps her greatest attribute, while she also has a knack for creating scoring opportunities off the dribble.
“Jackie fills a tremendous need for us in her ability to spread the floor with her long-range shooting,” Cunningham added. “We identified her not only as one of the best shooters out there, but as a kid with versatility to find a number of ways to put the ball in the basket.”
The Rams will add depth at the post with the addition of Henry. A 6’2” forward from Vadalia, Ga., Henry’s thick frame allows her to be aggressive on the glass, while her athleticism will prove to be a versatile asset on the offensive end. Her presence on the court didn’t go unnoticed as she earned first team AA All-State honors following her senior season at Vadalia High School.
“Shekinah is a tough, hard-nosed post player that will bring a lot of versatility and depth to our interior game,” said Cunningham. “Her fearlessness, physical nature, and work ethic will be a real asset in our program.”
A teammate of Barbour’s at Patrick Henry Community College, Johnson possesses a scorer’s mentality as well and adds depth to the Rams’ backcourt. She was named Rookie of the Year following her freshman season at Delaware State before receiving second team all-conference honors last year, averaging 14 points and six rebounds per outing.
“Sonia is another proven scorer that brings a physical presence at the guard position,” Cunningham noted. “She has a natural feel for the game and competitive nature that we feel will be an asset in understanding what it takes to win.”
Parks adds an additional perimeter threat for the Black and Gold, while displaying an up-tempo style of play. She has made great progress in her offensive game and earned first team All-Beltway conference accolades following the 2008-09 season at North Point High School in Waldorf, Md.
“Robyn has a tremendous upside with her size, athleticism, and versatility at her position,” said Cunningham. “She is going to be a great fit with our style of play and the number of different ways we think she can impact us on the floor.”
An athletic combo guard, Williams has earned the reputation of being a pure athlete. Her intense passion for the game and awareness on the court has allowed her to earn the respect of opposing offenses thanks to her defensive prowess.
“Zakia's passion and intensity for the game and how hard she plays is second to none,” Cunningham added. “She is a lockdown type of defender and a real playmaker on the offensive end of the floor.
“I am excited about the versatility we have with this class in the number of different positions they each can play,” Cunningham concluded. “The potential each of them has really excites me. This is a class that will immediately impact our basketball program and continue to build a bright future here at VCU.”
