North Carolina A&T State University Homecoming
The smell of hot dogs, sausage dogs, hamburgers, chicken, barbecue, chitterlings, and fish being shared with friends and foe alike is a rich tradition on this day.
Sandra Hughes on Channel 2 is giving a big plug for the Homecoming Parade, because on this day the North Carolina A&T State University Community will not be the same.
You see on this day is a time when alumni/friends meet and talk about yesteryear and swear out that they did things that you and I did not see or hear.
There is something profound about the anticipated emotional energy level and history of a North Carolina A&T State University Homecoming.
Students from the tobacco, corn, cottons fields, and streets of big and small cities, counties, and foreign countries have graduated from this university.
The old lines for registration to the new lines for refunds will not be forgotten.
The "Bowl" is where the activity started for fraternal and sororities ties after earlier advancement of recruitment in the dorms and cafeteria.
Boss Webster's, Mom's, Side Effects, Cosmos I & II, EL Roco, Trevi Fountain, Greensboro Cultural Center, Greensboro Coliseum, house parties, and often just walk in and sit down and have a meal all had something in common with entertainment.
The walls in the library still vibrate with theories, plans, and affections that died and many became reality for Presidential contenders, space explorers, NBA champions, music composers, Sit-In- Movement leaders, writers, military leaders, engineers, lawyers, doctors, Supreme Court Justices, educators, nurses, senators, hair care producers, job finders, agricultural experts, and entrepreneurs to name just a few of the thousands accomplishments of what this magnificent University has produced over the many years.
The yard would often yield a prospect of a freshman for the senior to challenge in the classroom or social interaction.
The Greensboro air can still give a chill of tragedy before the sun sets with warmth and sadness in remembrance of a falling scholar named Grimes.
But yet the symbolic gesture of wanting to be treated equally and fairly lead to the Sit-In Movement felt around the World:
From Dr. Crosby, Dr. Dudley, Dr. Bluford, Dr. Gibbs, Dr. Proctor, Dr. Dowdy, Dr. Thompson, Dr. Fort, Dr. Renick, Dr. Battle, and Dr. Martin they all came and gave to make education a necessary ingredient to life's formula for success for all that set foot on this hallow ground.
But on this day look at the joy and excitement in the eyes and you will see a history that no educational establishment in the world can touch or match.
The ingredients are here today with a new vision to make this university truly competitive with peers.
Those eyes are searching for classmates and friends to share memories and make up new stories to help spread the legend of this event.
The landscape has changed with new buildings and some roads realigned to show progress and the faith that leaders, businesses, and citizens have in supporting this great institution.
From the streets of the West Coast to the East Coast, North, and South the word is out that one of the premier universities in America has the greatest day in the land.
Remember this day started when most of those in attendance at Homecoming went back and started talking about the traditions, food, dress, educational attainment, and spirits to friends thus resulting in more recruits to visit and share the sacred memory of a North Carolina A&T State Homecoming.
Do not forget that Marvin Gaye would show up from time to time early in the practice season and say "What's Going on?"
The young people in attendance are spell bound to hear about the conditions and accomplishments of the older group in attendance, that are willing to share their experiences.
The football game does have special meaning in terms of a "Drum Line" and of course a victory gives a special favor to the bragging rights.
The openness of friendship, sharing of food and spirits are second to none on this day.
Everyone remembers the band and football team spending countless hours of practice so that they will be successful on this great day.
The Gold and Blue symbolizes a tradition of excellence in accomplishments second to none.
Countless prayers will be given for the safety and spiritual uplifting of our students, graduates and their friends that will all participate in the shaping of a world that strives for excellence in helping one another.
Yes the Aggie will always set the example for the World to follow.
As those in attendance leave they will look back and try to capture just a small second of cherishing the greatest moment here to share with their kids and friends for the next generation of visitors that will partake in a North Carolina A&T State University Homecoming Day. Remember this is where traditions of excellence are started and students employ the concepts of how they learned to think. Homecoming is more than just a party but a show case of permutations and computations.
