AGGIE WOMEN RELEASE 2009-10 SCHEDULE
Aggies to play in four tournaments, including WNIT
2009-10 WBB Schedule
GREENSBORO, September 14, 2009 – What kind of schedule do you put together after losing two of the best players to ever come through the program? Of course, you start the season by playing in the WNIT, a prestigious preseason tournament featuring 11 teams who advanced to the WNCAA Tournament’s field of 64 last season.
You then find three major programs and play in their respective tournaments. One of those major programs is perennial national power LSU. You must top that off by playing a conference schedule full of teams gunning for you after you have obtained back-to-back MEAC Regular-Season Championships, a MEAC Tournament Championship and a WNCAA Tournament appearance in 2008.
By the looks of things, there is one thing North Carolina A&T women’s basketball coach Patricia Cage-Bibbs is not afraid of – a challenge. The Aggie released their 2009-10 women’s basketball schedule on Monday. It features four tournaments, a road game at arch-rival N.C. Central and a road game against Big South power Liberty.
It is an ambitious schedule for a team that lost three-time first-team All-MEAC performer Amber Bland and 2008-09 MEAC Player of the Year Brittanie Taylor-James.
“Everyone is going to focus in on what we lost,’’ said Bibbs. “But I’m excited about what we have coming back. We have five seniors on this team. We have five seniors on this team who have been through some battles together. We have five seniors on this team with championship experience. I’m expecting them to provide the leadership needed to guide us through a difficult schedule.”
As a part of the WNIT, the Aggies will open the season at Marist on Nov. 13. The Aggies will get a chance to play at least two more games between Nov. 15-22. Following the WNIT, the Aggies are scheduled to play in New Mexico University’s tournament, LSU’s tournament and Iowa State’s tournament.
The Aggies’ schedule includes nine home games this season, including the home opener against SEC power Auburn on Dec. 1 at 7 p.m. The Aggies begin conference play against Norfolk State at Echols Hall on Dec. 5.
“We’re not just happy with making the (WNCAA) tournament,’’ said Bibbs. “We want to go there and win. Playing a schedule like this will get us prepared to achieve that goal because we’ll get a chance to play against different styles of play.”
