Vikings fall in season opener against Bears Shaw explodes in 4th quarter, wins 54-30 From sports reports
Saturday, August 29, 2009 The game was quite different from the last time they played — but the outcome was the same. In a rematch of last year’s Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association championship game, Shaw escaped with a thrilling 54-30 victory over Elizabeth City State in Raleigh on Saturday in the season opener for both teams. Shaw’s defense was dominate in beating ECSU 36-7 in the CIAA title game last season. Despite giving up 30 points, the Bears’ defense was just as in control. Qunintez Smith was the star, returning three interception for touchdowns. His return with 8:05 to play broke the fifth tie of the game, giving Shaw a 37-30 lead and opening the flood gates to a scoring flurry for the Bears. After a 24-all tie at halftime and a scoreless third period, Shaw lit up the scoreboard for 30 points in the final quarter, 24 in the final 8:05 with 21 coming on interception returns alone. Smith had returns of 70 and 34 yards and Micguel Johnson brought one back 63 yards for the final score of the night with 2:26 remaining. ECSU had its chances but just could not shake the two-time defending conference champions. The Vikings had leads of 7-0, on a Reggie Smith punt reurn, 10-7, 17-10, 24-17 and 30-27, but each time the Bears came back to tie the score.
