Originally published August 29, 2009 FAMU to scrimmage today By Will Brown DEMOCRAT STAFF WRITER Tallahassee is nearly 970 miles away from Dover, Del. but that distance is little matter to the Florida A&M and Delaware State football teams as both will hold scrimmages today in preparation for their season-opening clash next weekend. For FAMU, tonight's public scrimmage is an opportunity for the players, coaches and support personnel to hold a dress rehearsal for the home contest. The starting units for both the offense and defense will play against the second- and third-stringers. "We're pretty much solidified as who the guys are, but the thing is establishing the mental focus," said FAMU football coach Joe Taylor. The second-year coach is a firm believer of psycho cybernetics, and harps upon that principle to his team. Psycho cybernetics was coined in a 1961 book by former plastic surgeon Maxwell Maltz, who wrote his principle focused on "steering your mind to a productive, useful goal." Taylor said a productive scrimmage would be one where his team remains injury-free and able to rectify the mistakes made during an Aug. 22 scrimmage. Up in Dover, the Hornets have spent the greater part of this week simulating their season opener and coach Al Lavan's comments about the mental approach toward game preparation mirrored Taylor's.
