GREENSBORO — Retired UNCG chancellor Patricia Sullivan died Thursday morning after a two-year battle with pancreatic cancer. She was 69.
Sullivan retired in July 2008 after almost 14 years as university's chancellor. She was followed by current Chancellor Linda Brady.
Sullivan was the university's ninth chief executive and its first woman leader. She succeeded William Moran on Jan. 1, 1995. She came to Greensboro from Texas Woman’s University.
During her tenure, UNCG's enrollment grew 36 percent to slightly more than 17,000 students in 2007. The university added 10 new doctoral programs, opened the Gateway University Research Park with N.C. A&T and led a $115 million capital campaign.
After she announced her retirement, the university named a new science building and a science professorship for her.
Stephen Hassenfelt, the chairman of the UNCG Board of Trustees, said Sullivan was the kind of person you knew you’d get a straight answer from and gave her high praise for her work at UNCG.
“She quietly led the resurgence of UNCG over the last 13 years,” he said.
In a news release, Brady said: “Chancellor Sullivan transformed this campus. Her leadership and dedication, and her fighting spirit, have made an indelible mark on the life of this university. I feel the loss personally because Pat has been a source of advice and counsel during my first year as chancellor. She was a good friend to me as a newcomer to Greensboro. We shall miss her.”
