GREENSBORO, N.C. - North Carolina A&T State University Chancellor Harold L. Martin Sr. appointed J. Charles Waldrup as Interim General Counsel. Effective Monday, Aug. 10, Waldrup will serve two days a week at North Carolina A&T while continuing in his current role as associate vice president for legal affairs for The University of North Carolina General Administration.
Waldrup is Martin’s first senior level appointee, replacing Valerie L. Green, who resigned to accept a position out-of-state several months ago. Martin acknowledged that N.C. A&T will immediately launch a national search for this role.
"I am extremely pleased and fortunate to have someone with Charles' vast experience to serve in this capacity," Martin said. "His many years of legal service in higher education and public health have given Charles a broad background of legal experiences that certainly will benefit A&T."
Waldrup serves in the Legal Affairs Division of UNC General Administration in Chapel Hill where this unit provides legal advice and services to the Board of Governors, the President, senior officers of the General Administration, affiliated entities, and the legal counsel of the UNC constituent institutions.
An Asheville native, Waldrup's work focuses on a wide range of employment and benefits law, both at General Administration and with the campuses. He has been in this position since January 2002.
Previously, Waldrup worked for 17 years as a senior attorney assigned by the Attorney General’s Office to the UNC Health Care System (formerly University of North Carolina Hospitals). He handled a wide range of legal issues, including most aspects of health care law, personnel law, medical malpractice, and debt collection.
He was an associate attorney with Battle, Winslow, Scott & Wiley in Rocky Mount for four years and an associate attorney with Dalton H. Loftin in Hillsborough for a year.
Waldrup received his undergraduate degree with highest honors from the University of Tennessee-Knoxville (1973) followed by a law degree (1976), a master’s degree in history (1977), and a Ph.D. in history (1985) from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
He has been a member of the North Carolina State Bar since 1976, and he is a former chair of the Health Law Section of the North Carolina Bar Association. In addition, Waldrup was an adjunct instructor in the Executive Masters in Public Administration Program at North Carolina Central University and a guest speaker in courses at the UNC-Chapel Hill School of Public Health. He has been a book reviewer for the Journal of Southern History and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa, Phi Kappa Phi, and Phi Eta Sigma national scholastic honor societies.
