MEAC TRACK AND FIELD COMES TO A&T
Spruiel, Smith go after more MEAC gold
GREENSBORO, April 29, 2009 -- Senior Day is not something normally associated with track and field. But the eight men and women who make up North Carolina A&T’s track and field senior class could have a quasi Senior Day either Friday or Saturday at the MEAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
For the second time since Irwin Belk Track was constructed, N.C. &T will host the MEAC Championships. The last time the conference championships were held at N.C. A&T was 2006. Admission is $3 for each day of the event. Parking is free.
N.C. A&T’s senior class will begin competition on Friday led by senior standouts Alexandria Spruiel and Loreal Smith.
Spruiel and Smith have put together storied careers during their time at N.C. A&T. They were the first two females in program history to advance to the NCAA Indoor Nationals. Spruiel also has a trip to the NCAA Outdoor Nationals to her credit. Each runner also has won three MEAC titles during their careers to go along with being three-time regional qualifiers, including this season.
With the 2009 NCAA Division I East Regionals being hosted by N.C. A&T, Spruiel and Smith will not be performing at home for the last time. But this will be their final time to show how well they fare against competition within the conference. They will receive this opportunity at home.
Three other female seniors will try to win gold this weekend. Carmenta Mitchell and Christina Gray will team with Spruiel and Smith in the 4x400 relay. LaKeisha Williams will try to help the Aggies win the triple jump.
The men have three seniors – Lonnie Phifer, Ron Buchanan and Travanni Jett. Phifer will try to go after his third outdoor title and fourth overall in the shot put. Buchanan, who is the two-time defending MEAC Champion in the triple jump, will try to leave an impressive mark on the program with another victory.
One of his biggest challengers could be teammate David McFadgen. Other Aggie men who could come away with gold include 100 and 200 meter runner Calesio Newman and hurdler and high jumper Gordon Smith.
Smith could also come away with the gold as a part of the Aggies 4x400 relay team. On the women’s side, thrower Jerrine Foster comes in with an excellent chance to do well in the shot put and discus. Foster is coming off of a win in the discus at Penn Relays and she finished second at Penn Relays in the shot put. Foster’s throw in the discus was 159-feet. A throw of 147-feet won the MEAC championship last season.
A productive underclass mixed in with one last conference meet for the Aggies talented seniors will hopefully lead to a championship this in Greensboro this weekend.
