AGGIES GET OFFENSIVE IN WIN OVER UMES
Macklin adds five more RBIs to his totals
GREENSBORO, April 12, 2009 – Even though Xavier Macklin, George Hines and Jaron Neal have been red hot at the plate. Even though C.J. Beatty gets on base with multiple walks, the North Carolina A&T baseball team has not been able to post wins lately.
What made the difference on Sunday is that the Aggies got the pitching they needed as they avoided a three-game sweep by Maryland-Eastern Shore with a 14-4 win at War Memorial Stadium. Macklin followed his five-RBI performance on Saturday with another five RBIs Sunday. He also added two doubles and scored once as he finished the day 3-for-5. For the series, Macklin was 9-for-14 with 10 RBIs, four extra base hits and three runs scored.
Jaron Neal was 3-for-4 on Sunday with four RBIs. For the series, he was 8-for-14 with six RBIs. Hines also had an outstanding series in his new spot as the Aggies lead-off hitter. Hines went 3-for-4 on Sunday with three runs scored. Hines’ 8-for-13 series included two doubles, a triple and seven runs scored.
On the mound, Nick Boles and Garrett Braun combined to surrender just seven hits and strike out nine. Boles earned the win to improve to 2-2. Braun pitched the final 3.2 innings of the game and gave up just one run while striking out four.
The Aggies offense began to give Braun some cushion in the fifth. With the Aggies leading 5-3, singles by Marquis Riley and Hines put runners on first and third for RBI-man Macklin. Macklin came through with a single to center field to score Riley for a 6-3 Aggies lead. Beatty’s sacrifice fly to center field scored Hines as the Aggies took a four-run lead.
UMES moved back to within three in the seventh thanks to a Ben Vasko RBI sacrifice fly. But the Aggies offense remained efficient.
A throwing error put two runners in scoring position for the Aggies in the seventh. Macklin stepped to the plate and hit a two-run RBI double to give the Aggies a 9-4 lead. The Aggies put the Hawks away with a five-run eighth. James Howard started the scoring with an RBI single that scored Cyril Daniel. After Hines walked, Macklin produced even more runs with another two-run RBI double to put the Aggies ahead 12-4.
Four consecutive walks by UMES led to the Aggies final two runs as the Aggies snapped a nine-game losing streak with the win. The Aggies improved to 4-7 in the MEAC. The walk surrendered to Beatty in the eighth was the sixth time he walked in the series.
The Aggies return to action 6 p.m., Tuesday at Winthrop.
