AGGIES REMAIN HOT, DEFEAT WSSU
WINSTON-SALEM, April 5, 2009 – The power hitters the North Carolina A&T softball team has become known for are starting to hit again, and the Aggies pitching is starting to be a little more stingy.
On Sunday, those two components helped the Aggies win their eighth straight game with a 6-2 win over Winston-Salem State. The Aggies improved to 18-11 on the season as Sunday marked the eighth straight game the Aggies have scored fiver runs or more.
Juniors Jessie Larson and Bianca Alsobrook had two RBIs apiece with Larson hitting her third home run of the season. Sasha Philpot pitched four innings of relief, did not surrender a hit and improved to 8-4 on the season.
The Rams took a 2-0 lead against starter Jennifer Luper. The Aggies got on the board in the fourth on an Alsobrook RBI that scored Lillian Bullock who reached on a lead-off walk. Walks would continue to hurt the Rams in the fifth inning.
Yahamma White led off the inning with an infield single. It was followed up by an Ashley Carter walk. The MEAC’s RBI leader Ryanne Hill added to her totals by hitting a single up the middle to score White. It was Hill’s 36th RBI of the season and it tied the game at 2. Winston-Salem State starter Amber Shore compounded her problems by walking Tangie Conover to load the bases.
Shore struck out the next two batters she faced, but nullified those successes by walking in a run by walking Alsobrook. Shore walked in another run by hitting Aurora Baker with a pitch as Hill scored to give the Aggies a 4-2 lead. The Aggies first lead of the game would be enough for Philpot.
Philpot allowed only one base runner over four innings and that runner was picked off of first base by Larson, the Aggies catcher. Philpot struck out to win her fourth straight decision. Larson added insurance in the seventh with a two-run homer.
The Aggies will try to keep their winning streak going on Tuesday when they travel to Cullowhee, N.C., to face Western Carolina in a 3 p.m. doubleheader.
