... to start planning for a midnight madness basketball event. There should be no excuse why we can't organize something for next season. If there are obstacles, let us know now and together we can all come up with solutions.

collegebasketball.about.com/od/collegebasketballglossary/g/midnightmadness.htmDefinition: "Midnight Madness" refers to a massive pep rally that many schools hold on the first day of basketball practice in mid-October. Several big programs began staging a big public practice -- usually punctuated with a slam dunk contest, a scrimmage and lots of cheerleaders and dancers and loud music -- at the earliest possible time permitted by the NCAA -- 12am on the Saturday closest to October 15th -- and "Midnight Madness" was born. Many schools use Midnight Madness as a significant recruiting tool and invite key recruits to attend. When is Midnight Madness? The title is no longer particularly accurate. In 2005, the NCAA voted to allow "Midnight Madness" events to start at 7pm local time on the Friday closest to October 15th -- citing safety concerns and the fact that older fans weren't too jazzed about staying out until 2am. For the 2007-08 season, that's October 17th. But as so often happens with any NCAA regulation, one coach has found a loophole. The University of Kentucky, citing an NCAA regulation that allows for two hours' of on-court instruction per week prior to the official start of practice, received permission to stage "Big Blue Madness" on October 10. Expect more schools to follow suit in the years ahead. Before long, they'll be staging Midnight Madness events as "March Madness" events are still going on.

Shouldn't the next marketing campaign be focused on football?

Midnight Madness is an event not a marketing campaign per se and just as any other event it needs to be planned as early as possible, especially if we've never had one. You know at A&T it takes at least 10 departments and 20 approvals to hold an event in Corbett.

this is what it will take to have a midnight madness 1. Sponsor to provide food, t-shirt give away, 2. Pay the security bill , police charged the athletic dept by the hour plus the overtime so one cop will cost you any from $20-35 per hour. You may ask why we need police and security because they expect a large crowd. If we have a dj they automatically assume party and want to be involved

I'm assuming that we would need roughly the same amount of police officers that we would have for a spring game event. What is the ballpark cost of those man hours?

to me, these are the kinds of events that could help with recruiting and fan attendance at games, both would benefit the athletic department. so clearly there would be a return on the investment. promotions are very important for a successful athletic department! and that's one of the areas where i think our leadership comes up short...
