Calling it “regrettable” to be launching a new chancellor search only two years after the completion of the last one, University of North Carolina President Erskine Bowles told a committee that will recommend a new leader for N.C. A&T University that their job is critical to the future of the school.
“If we do a good job” at replacing current Chancellor Stanley Battle, Bowles said, “we won’t be back again to do this in my lifetime.”
Battle, who announced in February he would step down as chancellor after only a year and a half as of June 30, was not present for the first meeting of the search committee. He said when he announced his resignation that it was for family and personal reasons.
But there has also been tension on campus over Battle’s efforts to increase academic standards, which some believe reduces access by some worthy students to the historically black university...
