Norfolk wanted the tournament really bad this year, but the only state-of-the-art arena we have is the Constant Center at ODU and Norfolk wasn't gonna pay the rent with The Scope sitting right downtown. Hopefully Norfolk will bid again at the end of the Winston-Salem contract. By that time the new light rail system should be running and all the construction downtown will be completed. To me a less than pristine Scope is a better alternative (location) to Winston. Two host school, plenty of eateries, shopping and hotels downtown a decent night life. Plus 10k seats is more than enough for this event. But without knowing details of the proposals, who can say what the best deal was.

blessedaggie84, I thought that it was a rhetorical question about Ledisi. Yea, I have some of her music also & saw her at the capital jazz festival last season. She has a good show. I think that the response was towards getting a bigger name to drop jaws & to create instant buzz. Shucks...even Malcolm Jamal Warner brought in 3000 to his poetry slam night after night at the Nat Black Theater Festival in Winston... Chuck Brown at A&t's homecoming did the same. ( Im not saying get them). Maybe the idea is to say hey...there is not anything else to do except for the club, Baisden may be the only game in town... To Me, if I did it, I would do a free VIP event ( with league money) with email registration & a two drink Min. with Idres Elba with a Jamie foxx type or go Old school. And have the talent go to the game & announce it. Keep the list and hit everybody up next year. NCCU has a Homecoming cabaret every year that is packed. Wachovia has a party during the CIAA that was packed in Raleigh..I dont know about Charlotte. ===== Lastly, the tourny needs to grow new fans. They need to study A&T's homecoming for the youth/students. I think that this is what made winston win the bid in the first place...the Aggie Pride and spirit. I dont think that the SGA's of Winston & A&T could do a joint Show for the students, but someone needs to bring in a name for them.

A77....you, me and lot of other folks felt the same way. Thomas wanted luxury boxes and Scope doesn't have those amenities, so that was that. The MEAC tourny could really take off if were located and marketed properly. But who knows...it may grow in Winston!

Aggie 77 & Treese I think that Raleigh was reconsidering their decision, I saw a story somewhere ....cant find it. It just made me say forget them! Now as it turns out, no one is going to those replacement shows either, which they claimed that they could make more money with. www2.journalnow.com/content/2008/mar/16/meac-may-be-coming-to-winston-salem/c_1/=========== By John Dell JOURNAL REPORTER Published: March 16, 2008 RALEIGH Winston-Salem is a finalist to play host to the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Tournament next season. According to Chico Caldwell, Winston-Salem State's athletics director, Winston-Salem, along with Greensboro and Norfolk, Va., all submitted bids to the conference. But there is also a fourth city that could be considered: Raleigh, according to several sources, might want the tournament back. The RBC Center has played host to the MEAC the past three seasons, but Raleigh had decided in December not to submit a bid. But it is believed that city officials here have been negotiating to keep the tournament for at least another year. Commissioner Dennis Thomas of the MEAC said he wasn't at liberty to discuss which cities are in the running, but he said that by next month a decision will be made.

There is no such person known as Ledisi.
That is just a urban legend.

it was a horrible dumb ego motivated decision to leave raleigh. the tourney had grown every year in raleigh and had substantial momentum coming off of last year's exciting competition. out of towners had finally learned their way around raleigh and were comfortable with the hotels there. virtually all of the men's games last year went down to the wire and the a&t/coppin women's championship game was a nail biter too. no way the tourney games this year will be more exciting than last year. i think almost all of the men's games had less than a 10 point margin of victory last year. yet, after all of that excitement, our leadership moves the tourney to winston salem of all places! if it couldn't be kept in raleigh, i'd rather it be in norfolk than winston. yep, for the first time in about 3 years, i think the meac tourney will see a drop in attendance... What are you talking about? What other deals were on the table? Raleigh announced before the tourney that they wanted no parts of a new contract with the MEAC. aggie77, its my understanding that raleigh and the rbc reconsidered and was willing to offer a one year extension to the meac. i don't know what the terms of the deal were, but apparently we had an option to return to raleigh. "my take" is that thomas was embarrassed that he didn't find out that raleigh would not submit a bid until after the fact. so even though raleigh later offered him a last minute olive branch, his ego said phuck you, we'll take our business elsewhere. i think it was decks who previously put it in plain business language many months ago. i'm paraphrasing, but why would you relocate a historically non-growth event which had uncharacteristically grown 3 consecutive years in raleigh?

I just notice on ticketmaster one adult MEAC tournament ticket is going for $75 plus fees. It reasonable but I sure miss people like SWV , Regina Howardm and others performing between games

Take a look at the tournament's current seating chart. Every year Hampton gets the half court section and this year is no different. On the other side is SC State. Also Hampton, SC State and Winston Salem State got full sections which is no big deal but yet again A&T is dissed even though the A&T has the most attendees every year.
Thomas' first concern is about Hampton and its president, Harvey. I wonder why the ADs don't make the MEAC rotate the halfcourt sections with everyone including Hampton.
I was in the Scope last year and it is old with seating that is very cramped. You can't get too many tall or big guys sitting side-by-side in that joint or it will be a rough night. ODU arena is very nice and very comfortable but it is too far from downtown.

www.meachoops.com/content/pdf/09bb_seating.pdfMan Jazz...that's some crap. On top of that, A&T only has one and a half sections, while Hampton and SCSU have two full sections right at half court! There's no doubt who's at the top of Thomas' priority list!

ACC Tourney tickets may go public Submitted by kentysiac on 02/16/2009 - 11:54 Tags: ACC Now | ACC ACC officials are talking about holding the first public sale of ACC Tournament tickets since 1966, an ACC associate commissioner confirmed Sunday.
Karl Hicks, who directs the ACC's men's basketball operations, said the "perfect storm" of holding the tournament in its largest venue during a huge economic downturn has some schools holding unsold tickets.
The tournament is scheduled March 12-15 at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta. The dome has been configured for 36,000 seats – 4,083 fewer than its biggest crowd in 2001 — in a slightly smaller set-up to help ensure that fans get a good view of the game.
But some schools have been unable to sell their allotment of 2,600 tickets. Hicks said the ACC is redistributing unsold tickets to schools whose demand exceeds the number of tickets they’ve been allotted.
Still, he said, there’s a chance the schools won’t be able to sell all the tickets to their boosters, and that could lead to a public sale of unused tickets.
“It’s a possibility,” Hicks said.
There could be some hesitation among ACC members eager to preserve their boosters’ exclusive control over tickets. But the desire to generate revenue and welcome new fans might trump that hesitation and cause the ACC or the individual schools to sell tickets to the general public.
Hicks wouldn’t speculate about those issues, but said he’s in constant contact with school officials as they make their plans with the tournament less than a month away.

If A&T men's BB team doesn't make it to the semi-finals of the MEAC Tourny, I doubt if the Tourny will have a crowd larger than 6,000 on Friday night.

I think that the League missed out. They had a table at the game and gave away a pair of tkts but....man. (shaking my head). I missed the halftime show, but at least the Tom Joyner gig should have been made known. This game was packed!
