JACKSON, Miss. - A Jackson State University football player charged in connection with a Jackson bank robbery gave police a fake name when he was arrested, police said.
Michael Terrell Walters, 21, is charged with bank robbery in connection with Tuesday's robbery of the Trustmark at 6240 Old Canton Road. JSU officials confirmed on Wednesday that Walters is a student at the university and a member of the JSU football team.
On Tuesday, A man entered the bank and showed a weapon to the tellers. He left with an undisclosed amount of cash. No customers were inside the bank, and no one was injured, Lt. Jeffery Scott said.
About 45 minutes later, Jackson police, working with Ridgeland police, took Walters into custody not far from the bank, Scott said. Police allegedly recovered some money and other evidence from Walters, Scott said.
When he was arrested, Walters identified himself to police as Michael Terrell Smith, Scott said.
Walters was being held without bond on Wednesday at the Hinds County Detention Center in Raymond.
