I was over on the uncg fan site yesterday and we all came up with a great idea for a holiday basketball tournament featuring A&T, WSSU, UNCG and High Point U. This could be billed as the Triad Big 4 tournament or the Titans of the Triad tournament ... or something cool like that. Get the mayors from all three cities involved and cross promote the hell out of it. Run ads and promotions one each school's website. uncgfans.freeforums.org/why-no-home-home-series-with-a-t-t155.htmlOk, I have given you guys the vision. Now its time for you to do what you do and make this happen.

Wheeler, this should be right up you alley. In your first press conference you talked about partnering with other schools to create a local football classic to bring in more revenue. Well, this would be like creating the same classic game during basketball season.
Let's make this happen.

What about Elon?

Is Burlington considered a part of the Triad?
I thought that was just Greensboro, High Point and Winston.
Nah, Elon will have to be the odd man out in this one.

I'd spend the weekend in G'boro for this event.

That would be a good idea. Sorta like the Little Four Tournament with the High Schools but on a more sofisticated college level. You know, back in the '60s Duke, Carolina, State and Wake Forest created the Big Four Tournament. The ACC Conference took off like a bullet from that.

I'm not sure if UNC-G and High Point University's fan base would be strong enought to help fill up a 25,000 seat arena though. I'm not sure if A&T and WSSU has that kind of fan base either. I'd guess a tounament like that would put 10,000 butts in the seats.

Yeah, if you had UNCG vs. WSSU in the first game on Friday and A&T vs. HPU in the second game, I think that doubleheader could possibly draw about 15,000.
The next day you would probably look to have around 10,000 for the 3rd place game and the championship.
That's 25,000 fans for a two day tournament. Not bad.

A&T tried to get this done but the other local coaches - UNCG, Elon and High Point - were not for it. Plus right now none of the BB programs are strong attractions even A&T isn't that strong of an attraction right now.

Jazz, please give us more information.
When did A&T attempt to organize a tournament? Why did the other schools balk?
Follow through with your post ...

Yeah Jazz, when did that happen?
There is only one problem Thrilla.........this idea makes too much sense for government officials to be involved. lol

I don't see what the problem could be.
You have:
1) an empty building that is already rolling out the read carpet for UNCG
2) four area mid-majors who all need to create buzz
3) An athletic director at A&T who has already gone on record and stated that his plan is to partner with other schools to create a big event.
What is the draw back?

The scope of this event should have strong appeal to G'boro business community.

Curtis Hunter aggressively tried to get the local coaches to go for it but found no interest. Eaves, talked to the local coaches two years ago and found no interest. Now, I don't think Eaves is interested in a tournament. I believe the main drawback for A&T is the money issue. A&T's main question is "Can this tournament actually bring in top dollar that can replace a "money gurantee" game?"
