www.myfoxwghp.com/myfox/pages/News/Detail?contentId=8046141&version=2&locale=EN-US&layoutCode=TSTY&pageId=3.2.1By CHAD TUCKER FOX8 News State officials have told North Carolina's public universities to cut five percent from each of their budgets. Originally, universities were asked to hold back three percent of state dollars. The cuts at the Piedmont's three state-supported schools total more than $15 million: The request adds up to $6.8 million at the University of North Carolina Greensboro, about $5 million at North Carolina A&T State University and $3.5 million at Winston-Salem State University. N.C. A&T officials have organized a committee to look at ways to cut back, from limiting budgeted travel to re-evaluating open vacancies. "Every position has to be justified, signed off by a vice chancellor and then vetted to that group to be voted up or down," said A&T spokesman Robert Pompey. Winston-Salem State has already frozen hiring, delayed non-essential purchasing and said it won't add faculty or staff unless it's absolutely critical. It also has created a review board to oversee all spending. "We are doing everything," said WSSU's Gerald Hunter. "We are working through the organization and ways to address this just like any other university has." Neither UNCG, NC A&T or WSSU are looking at cutting academic programs at this time. The UNC System has asked all universities to re-evaluate some programs that are not self-supporting.
