VIRGINIA BEACH, Va., December 8, 2008 – North Carolina A&T men’s basketball senior Nic Wilson doesn’t see the big deal. After two years of playing behind outstanding players and going some nights without earning a minute of playing time, Wilson is just fine with not hearing his name called as a starter.
He’s shown his pleasure with his role over the Aggies first eight games of the season. On Monday he was awarded for his acceptance of being a reserve by being named the MEAC Player of the Week after scoring a career-high 26 points in the Aggies 93-66 blowout win of Norfolk State.
“Too much is made of starting,’’ said Wilson. “Even though I don’t start, I get the same minutes, and I play with the same players. “It really doesn’t make a difference to me.”
Wilson is a Trenton, N.J., native who is in his third season of action with the Aggies after transferring in from Bowling Green. Over his first two years, Wilson averaged just 3.1 points per game. This season, he leads the Aggies in scoring at 13.0 points per game.
“I shoulder some of the blame for some of that,’’ said head coach Jerry Eaves. “I had him in the starting lineup last year probably before it was his time. This year there is an understanding that this is his opportunity, and he is going out there playing aggressively. He’s giving it all he has.”
In the Aggies win over Norfolk State on Saturday, Wilson began his march for player of the week honors early. He scored 13 of his 26 in the first 10 minutes of the game after entering the game at the 15-minute mark of the first half.
“I came in and played behind some good players,’’ said Wilson. “I got a chance to follow their leadership. I feel like this year is my turn to step up and lead.”

Nick played a great game. He did not take any bad shots. I just hope he can keep it up.

Nick played a great game. He did not take any bad shots. I just hope he can keep it up. You're right. He did have a great game. Hopefully, he can be consistently effective as a scorer (13 pts up), as well as rebound and play good defense. This is his last opportunity to leave his stamp on the program. I don't know if Alston has gotten the kudos he deserves. I thought he had a very good game at the point. Assists versus turnovers and defense. He had a calming affect on the team. If he continues to play well, this team can be a force to reckon with. Especially with the big people playing much better.

eaves knows his personnel better than most of us do, as he should. because wilson in previous years scored on a very limited basis, i didn't realize he had the potential to put up big numbers. in fact, i don't think the rest of the meac knew it either.
i'm tellin' ya, eaves is very clever when it comes to disguising a player's talents. he did it with rush by bringing him off the bench. it took a full season before the rest of the meac knew how dangerous rush was. i think the reason eaves decided to start rush last year was because rush was no longer a secret weapon. he'd scorched the meac the previous year coming off the bench, so last year they all knew what he could do. i think eaves is doing the same thing with wilson...

This is good news for the young Man. The league will soon key in on him. But thats how it is. It also adds to His confidence. I like our bench and we need to keep improving. Now...as for Nic, he has another gear when facing the foe's starters who were getting winded. They had that " oh man I've got to run harder just to keep up with this reggie miller ( in terms of energy) type clone." look on their faces. Duane J can score in bunches also. Tavarus lets the game come to him and He gets his looks. I just like a good shooting % & defense. Deloach/NSU worked soooo hard for almost every point that night, and Coleman ( tied for 24th nationally for blocks) was waiting for him. The road in December will tell a lot.

The one player on this team that is consistant and makes a difference evey game in Robert Johnson. I love his game. He is not flashy and he never forces a shot. He's always on the boards especially the offensive boards. He's a special player.

I thought that he and Alston should have gotten more playing time their frosh and sophomore years. I know Johnson started getting more playing time at the end of last season. However, I wonder how much better they would be today, If they had more playing time earlier?

Robert started to come around and earn more playing time at the end of last year. He played very well down the stretch. I think I read somewhere that Eaves said Johnson has put forth more effort and focus towards his game.
No question he is solid. I though Ed Jones would step up and lead the team but he has not found his groove. Very well could be Johnson or maybe they will just be a team that you dont know who is going to have a big night. Not a bad problem for a Coach, last year I could look at the box score and if Rush then not have a minimum of 18 we loss.

He's a special player. you are so right about johnson... he has turned into a solid scorer... we all knew he could rebound because he was the "kurt rambus" at dudley... having to clean up for graves & benton... i remember eaves saying that by johnsons & alstons junior yr... they will be star quality players... sounds like eaves not only knows what he is talking about... but he knows what he is doing...
