triangle.bizjournals.com/triangle/othercities/triad/stories/2008/12/08/daily14.htmlThe Institute for Advanced Journalism Studies at N.C. A&T University has received a grant of $254,000 from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to promote diversity in the industry, according to an announcement. With support from the grant, the institute’s “One Society Journalism Program” will provide student journalists the opportunity to learn alongside professional journalists exploring the continuing relevance of the 1968 Kerner Commission appointed by President Lyndon Johnson after race riots in 1967. That commission warned that “our nation is moving toward two societies, one black, one white – separate and unequal.” Black journalists, students and academics will spend two years focusing the education achievement gap and segregated housing patterns as issues that keep the threat of “two societies” alive, the announcement said.
