SAVANNAH, Ga. — A SWAT team surrounded a dormitory at Savannah State University Friday after a student was shot and wounded.
University spokeswoman Loretta Heyward said SWAT was called because officials believe the shooter was still in an apartment in the residence hall.
The shooting happened between 11 a.m. and noon at the historically black college on Savannah's south side and campus officials don't know a motive or whether the shooter was a student, she said.
Officials have not released the name of the wounded student, who was taken to an area hospital for treatment.
The campus was locked down immediately afterward. Cars were allowed to leave the school but were not being allowed onto the campus in Savannah along Georgia's coast.
Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police spokesman Judy Pal confirmed the department had sent a SWAT team to the campus but declined further comment since campus police were in charge of the investigation.
