GREENSBORO -- So he lives at the beach and has ended his basketball coaching career. To most of us, that sounds like retirement. Dave Odom apparently views it as a new challenge.
Guilford College announced Wednesday that Odom, one of its most prominent alumni, will serve as a special adviser to President Kent Chabotar starting next month. The job will entail fundraising, recruiting students, advising current athletes and guest lecturing.
So you can call him a legend in semi-residence.
"Dave has a lifetime of experience to share, and he loves and believes in the college's mission and tradition," Chabotar said. "He is excited, as we are, for this opportunity as he starts a new phase in his career."
Odom, a 1965 Guilford graduate, is best known for coaching Tim Duncan and Wake Forest to consecutive ACC championships in 1995 and '96. Those are the centerpieces of a 22-year head coaching career at East Carolina, Wake and South Carolina that produced 406 victories, 15 NCAA tournament appearances and three NIT titles.
Odom stepped down from the South Carolina job after last season, but isn't ready to stop working. Guilford intends to embark on several capital projects, one of which is a student wellness and fitness center, and will consider Odom one of its go-to guys in that process.
"I am both honored and excited by the opportunity to return to Guilford as a consultant and assistant to President Chabotar," Odom said. "Guilford continues to serve its students and alumni well, and I am proud to be called a Guilfordian. I am anxious to get to know our students and to visit our many fine alumni."
The school, which reported 2,641 students earlier this month, has more than doubled in enrollment this decade and Guilford officials believe it must keep going. Enrollment provides 78 percent of the institution's operating budget, according to a progress report released by Chabotar's office in May.
