Elon law school gets $2 million gift Thursday, October 23 (updated 12:33 pm) Staff Reports
GREENSBORO — The Elon University School of Law has received $2 million to support what is now the school's largest scholarship endowment.
The gift is from the Dalton L. McMichael Sr. Foundation and will pay for three full-tuition scholarships annually. The first McMichael Law and Leadership Fellow scholarship will be awarded to a student entering in fall 2009.
The scholarship will be awarded to incoming students with high academic abilities, significant life or educational leadership experiences and great potential for future leadership.
The foundation is named for the late Dalton L. McMichael Sr., the Madison man who helped found textile companies such as Madison Throwing Co., Macfield Texturing and May Yarns.
Three of McMichael's grandsons attended Elon, and his daughter, Gail M. Drew of Durham, is an Elon trustee. Elon's Dalton L. McMichael Sr. Science Center, which opened in 1999, is named for him.
