www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/09/24/AR2008092401223.htmlHoward Grants Most Black Doctorates in Science Howard University is the top producer of African American graduates with science and engineering doctoral degrees, according to a report from the National Science Foundation. The historically black university outranked all of the nation's institutions of higher learning, including Yale, Stanford, Brown and Princeton. The study examined educational trends over the past two decades and compared institutions to determine how many students later earned doctoral degrees in science and engineering fields. Howard led the country with 310 recipients from 1997-2006. Seven other historically black colleges and universities ranked in the Top 10: Spellman College with 224; Hampton University with 150; Florida A&M with 135; Morehouse College with 100; North Carolina A&T with 99; Southern University A&M College at Baton Rouge with 89; and Xavier University with 79. Harvard University had 73, and the University of Maryland at College Park had 72 graduates. "This is exciting news for Howard University," said Alvin Thornton, the university's interim provost and chief academic officer. "An important dimension of the university's mission is the preparation of African American and other underrepresented students for doctoral-level graduate study and professional careers in the STEM (Science, Technology Engineering and Mathematics) disciplines."

Our doctoral program is fairly new. We should move up in years to come.
